Hey Richard!

As far as the TV tuner is concerned there isn't any real processing going on.
The incoming singanl gets redirected to the Matrox and it does the work. I am
sure the PPro would have no issues with the scheme. Capturing in real time
would be a real hassel though, especially on the fly conversion to mpeg4. Also
there are pci capture cards that do the processing these days although I am
currently now using one of those. I prefer my setup despite the need for a
heavy-duty cpu and ram since it gives me far more control over the output.

For sure. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

VAX/VMS was my training ground.

I forget when I got shoved into Solaris, early 90's I guess, 1992 sounds
familiar. At first I was highly resistive but warmed up to it after learning
c. Wrote a few tape archiving routines as well as helped out on a database and
wrote many manpages and a few howto's.

I'll have to take your word on that.

There are ways to enhance it. Lately I've been playing around with arena to
make the bash shell more cshellish but have been distracted lately with making
the 64-bit machine here more of a purist 64-bit machine. Too many
distractions. <EG>

RS> and shell scripts. I have to use mc for that. Ugh. :-(

I am not a big fan of mc.

RS> And don't even get me started about case-sensitive filenames, but
 RS> that

I like that idea. Don't you dare touch that!!! Don't even think about it.

Probably.

MK>> BAH! You obviously haven't seen my linux terminal.

RS> No, and I'd probably learn some things from your setup, but if you've
RS> never played with 4DOS and its brethren before, I'm almost *certain*
RS> that you'd be the one learning more. :-)

Possibly. I admit you have the advantage in this particular area but that in
itself doesn't make you right.

RS> I'm not the only person begging Rex and co to port 4DOS to Linux, but
RS> so far he hasn't listened (and a closed shell might be a hard sell in
RS> that environment). But I'd pay $50 for it in a heartbeat. Or more.

I'd have to see and play with it before making a judgement call. So far I
haven't seen anything better then what I have as we speak.

RS> Not really. The UNIX world can learn from other platforms. Really.

Usually what to avoid. ;-)

Everything could stand improvement. The thing is that linux still has a future
whereas os/2 doesn't. Improvement is far more possible in linux then it is for
os/2 ... and only history for others.

Life is good,
Maurice
