Ärende: Try to install Maximus on linux
=======================================
*** Answering a msg posted in area CarbonArea (Private Received Netmail).
Hello Bob Jones!

18 Apr 06 08:11, you wrote to me:

GKA>> I have trying to install Maximus linux version from

 BJ> Good.

I have try to getting it working for some months ago where it first was my
meaning on begun to run linux for systems but dropped again as I have my
msgbase on one pc and files on another pc, so now it has been moved to be on
same mashine it all and my fdo system and other mail system is changed over to
run by linux is it time to getting linux max ready to use for filebase and find
some linux programs there can work with maximus for filelist doing.
I have used several bbs system in the times, started with Wildcat for the first
use then gone to Opus and from Opus to Maximus (the time before windows comes
in real doing and it was good old DOS system), after some times running Maximus
I change to ru RemoteAccess BBS and then it was now by 3 mashines with each ow
mailer on it and then to elebbs system and then last to Maximus + some other
BBs system for windows 98/2000/xp doing.
It is my mind to starting to find a way to by linux used maxius for user
whenready in linux to telnet to maximus as I have husky soft for mail and file
processing.

GKA>> It is my meaning on having max to run behind my

 BJ> Ok....

 GKA>> I have tried to run ./configure --
GKA>> prefix=/home/kofo/max and then make + make install

 BJ> Ok.
GKA>> But when it trying to install it says it not can doing this.

BJ> (1) I assume you have the proper permissions on the file tree at
BJ> /home/kofo/max for the account you are running make on.

BJ> (2) If I remember right, you are going to need to pass an argument to
BJ> make. From memory "make all" or "make max squish sqafix" are the
BJ> needed parameters. Otherwise, make will have nothing to do. Ah....
BJ> After quickly skimming the master Make file again, need "make
 BJ> build".....

BJ> (3) You may want to run "make clean" first.

BJ> (4) You may have to run the "make build" or equivalent two or three
BJ> times before everything succeedes. If I remember right, there is a
BJ> library we have out of order in the make that gets missed in the first
BJ> round for some linking, and gets picked up in the second round. Also,
BJ> the first round you need to compile both max and squish before all the
BJ> libraries get compiled. Sqafix is also able to be made from the make
BJ> file, but that was an add on and is not well documented. I think
BJ> "make build" builds all three at this time.

GKA>> Here is so shall I just run it as root or local user

GKA>> the new files and old files together.

BJ> The ./configure script documents that it needs to run as root. I run
BJ> max on its own user account. Don't forget that the first time you run
BJ> max you need to use the command line option to generate the user
BJ> database. This is a one time option.

BJ> As to file areas, you can set up old areas and new areas -- each as
BJ> their own area. [Sort of how I handle tophat.darktech.org for my
BJ> "archived" file and message areas.] There is a way to have files in
BJ> one area show up in another area for the BBS via paths specified in
BJ> the files.bbs for the area. I normally don't use that, and haven't
BJ> tried it on the Linux version of Max.

BJ> Note that you will need to watch case of file and path names in max
BJ> control files. We tried to make Max case insensative or force case
BJ> where it made sense for the linux version. This was because the
BJ> original code ran in enviornments where the file system is not case
BJ> sensitive, and Max sometimes wasn't consistent on case. Linux is case
BJ> sensitive, and this sometimes bites, especially in the control file
BJ> setup. Also, the issue of / vs \ needs to be watched. I believe I
BJ> have been using fully specified paths and not much relative paths in
BJ> the Linux version to get around some issues.

All my directories and paths in linux is in lovercase.
By getting maximus to show and use oldfiles and new files is just how to do it,
it can maybe in some doc and manual for maximus.

             Take care
        Gert Andersen
