Ärende: Accessing SHARES on DOS PCs

I am attempting to migrate my BBS over from my machine that is running
MS-DOS 6.22 to my OS/2 machine.
 
I originally had the idea that I would then convert the DOS machine into
a debian box, set up samba, and let it be a file server to the BBS, via
the network.  However, OS/2 and samba no longer get along, so I had the
brilliant idea that the MS-DOS networking tools might allow the OS/2
box to access the file drives on the DOS box (which would require
no conversion to debian/samba).
 
Many hours of horrible fun later, I have come to the conclusion that OS/2
and MS-DOS networking also do not get along.  Funny, since they grew out
of the same project and all.
 
The DOS box has the MS Networking installed, including the WG1049 package,
which allows the DOS box to act as a server and a peer.  I have a sample
share set up, and my Win98 box is able to access it perfectly, reading and
writing files.  My debian box cannot, but I am not really surprised at that.
 
I am surprised that OS/2 will not allow me to access the machine.  It shows
up under Connections, but when I attempt to view the shares, I get an error
message box (don't remember exact error, but something about how it could
not show me anything).  This is even less than OS/2 can do with the
"broken" samba box.
 
Not only that, but if I go into an OS/2 window, and attempt to map a drive
to the DOS box share, using NET USE, the system crashes completely.  Very
Windows-esqe... the only thing different is that the screen is black,
instead of blue. ;-)
 
Is there some trick to getting OS/2 to read (and write) to a SHARE on
an MS-DOS box?
