I'd be willing to bet that AT&T can provide you with service.  Take Mike's
advice and and keep calling them until you get a clueful rep.

If you want to take David's advice and look for an alternative provider, note
that I live in Verizon territory, and get my DSL service from DSLExtreme.com. 
I've been pretty happy with them.  I originally chose their service because,
after I received marketing material from Verizon, I tried to sign up and they
told me that they couldn't provide service to my location.  Obviously this was
not true, because DSLExtreme is using Verizon lines and central office
locations.  But, I wasn't patient enough to want to try to wade through the
Verizon bureaucracy.  DSLExtreme works in AT&T territory as well.  Here's a

One pertinent note: they provide only a dsl modem.  You'll need to purchase a
router (unlike the 2Wire that AT&T will provide, which is a device which
combines the modem and router functionality).

Finally, here's a link which pictures L.A. area telephone central offices.  I
think this is up-to-date, but am not certain.  Perhaps you'll recognize one
near you, although actual addresses are not provided.  If you can figure out
the one closest to you, you can then use Google maps to see how distant it is
to you.  I think the limit is about 5,000 meters, but the closer the better.
