Ellen,

Yes! STOP USING THE THING! Until you get your UPS run your systems =
unprotected if you have to. You are literally playing with fire! The = unit has
developed a defect and an electrical device with a defect = belongs in only one
place, the trash.

Well, my USP should arrive Monday.

Meanwhile I have a laptop from work that is not wonderfully useful
because I can't plug a mouse into it -- instead of a mouse port it has
one for TV. Why such a configuration would have been ordered is =
beyong
  me.

Semi-accidentally, after the last "event" I only rebooted the P II...
that was on Friday afternoon and it is still running. Now I am
  wondering whether either
  a) some kind of electrical problem could have developed in the Dell =
that
causes everything plugged in to the surge-protector thing with it to
  also blow up; or
  b) something happened to the surge-protector thing and it is no longer
able to properly do its full job but manages if only one machine is
turned on (to test this I should try with just the Dell turned on, =
have
  not done that).

For the last event, the laptop was also plugged into the =
surge-protector
thing and all three machines blew up. It was the most violent event =
so
far, which I suppose could point to choice b) above.

I'm sorry to be so hardware-ignorant, I keep saying "surge-protector
thing" because what I have is fancier than a regular surge protector =
but
I don't know what to call it. I got it from Dell when I bought the =
Dell
computer -- in addition to the green light to show it's on it also has =
a
red one that lights up if it detects a problem with the building =
wiring.
(It lit up when I first got the system which was before I had my house
rewired. It is not lit up now.) It's semicircular in shape and fits
three of those box plugs that come with stuff like modems, plus five
  regular ones.

  Any thoughts?
