Humorously I was over in the US recently discussing how to get Electronic
Health oecords (EHR) "standardized" esp wrt US federal & our dear selves (& the
canadians, ozzies etc.etc) & widely in use so e can all start saving some
serious cash...anyway:

& part of the plan was:

http://www.ehiprimarycare.com/news/item.cfm?ID=1335

"Medicare, the largest US Federal payer of medical care, has announced that it
is to help speed up the adoption of electronic health records by giving away
proven electronic patient record software.

In what could prove to be a watershed move Medicare ƒ “ the largest source of
funding for medical and health-related services for people without health
insurance - has announced that it will give away a version of the Vista
open-source EPR to family practitioners across the US. Although many US doctors
use computers for billing and administrative purposes it is estimated that
relatively few yet have computerised patient records.

The US Government has committed to developing a national health infrastructure
and ensuring that every citizen has an electronic health record by 2014.

According to a report in the New York Times from next month Medicare will start
to make a version of the Vista EPR software freely available to family
physicians, enabling them to cost-effectively computerise their medical
practices.

The NYT article says that only 20-25% per cent of the 650,000 licensed doctors
in the US outside the military and Department of Veterans Affairs are yet using
EPR systems.

Medicare has worked for three years on the development of a new simplified and
easy to install version of Vista called VistaOffice, especially designed for
small medical practices. Although the software itself is free doctors will
still have to cover the costs of installation, implementation and ongoing
support. "

"There is no one in medicine who does not consider it both crucial and long
overdue to have electronic records in doctor's offices and hospitals.

With electronic files, patient records are not stuck on pieces of paper in
endless files, but are on a screen at the touch of a key. The computers alert
doctors to do medical tests and avert errors by warning when they write a
prescription for the wrong drug or the wrong dose. Patients can often see their
own files and even make their own appointments, online, from their homes.

But most doctors have balked. The systems cost tens of thousands of dollars,
and doctors worry that the companies selling them and providing support will go
out of business. Many use computers to file health insurance claims, but only
20 percent to 25 percent of the nation's 650,000 licensed doctors outside the
military and the Department of Veterans Affairs are using electronic patient
records.

Now, however, Medicare, which says the lack of electronic records is one of the
biggest impediments to improving health care, has decided to step in. In an
unprecedented move, it said it planned to announce that it would give doctors -
free of charge - software to computerize their medical practices. An office
with five doctors could save more than
$100,000 by choosing the Medicare software rather than buying software
from a private company, officials say.

The program begins next month, and the software is a version of a well-proven
electronic health record system, called Vista, that has been used for two
decades by hospitals, doctors and clinics with the Department of Veterans
Affairs. Medicare will also provide a list of companies that have been trained
to install and maintain the system."

Notice the use of the name "Vista" <G>
