THE MOON MEETS JUPITER AND VENUS

Venus and Jupiter had a very close conjunction on November 4th and 5th,
and are now rapidly pulling away from each other. But they are still close
enough together to form dramatic arrangements with the Moon at dawn on
November 9th and 10th.

A RARE GLIMPSE OF MARE ORIENTALE

Spectacular Orientale is the youngest large lunar basin, but it's centered
just beyond the western limb of the Moon. Fortunately, favorable
librations tip the Moon so that Orientale's main rings and mare lava flows
occasionally come into view. The brief Orientale observing season is now
upon us; the first opportunity occurs before dawn on November 8th.

A DAYTIME OCCULTATION OF JUPITER

The thin waning crescent Moon will occult the second-brightest planet as
seen from much of North America on Tuesday, November 9th. The catch is
that it will happen in broad daylight, around midday or late morning, with
the Moon and Jupiter generally being a little higher than the Sun and
fairly far off to its right.

NOVEMBER METEORS

The weak, long-lasting Taurid meteor shower should be at its most active
this week. Under ideal observing conditions you may see 8 or 10 Taurids
per hour. The much more famous Leonids are expected to peak on Wednesday
morning, November 17th, well after the crescent Moon has set.
