           Not in the sense of families which have had a lot of money for a
long time!  Typically, the old Vancouver houses I was thinking of started out
as one- room cabins in the suburbs.  Even after they'd been added onto very few
exceeded 600 sq. ft. and almost none had basements.  Our house was like that...
so was my uncle's, in later years, when he had a wife & three kids... and the
one where my grandparents lived, with up to six people in total.  These were
all in different parts of the city in areas which were chiefly forest &
farmland during the early 1900's.  Then, as the population grew, developers
acquired the modest housing of my youth & replaced it with housing the average
person couldn't afford.  The net result is that many people now think of a
"starter home" as something with 3,000 sq. ft. & all mod cons.  The "suburbs"
are further out in the weeds too....  :-/

           Probably not... but you don't strike me as nouveau riche, either! 
It seems to me you're doing what the working classes did years ago by fixing
things up as best you can with found materials, with whatever you can get free
or for a nominal sum, and by the sweat of your brow.  Dallas & I have done
quite a lot of that as well.  I'm glad to hear there are others who are still
doing it....  :-)

           To you, perhaps, but it's new to me!  I noticed some years ago when
I was visiting relatives in Saskatchewan that they also used expressions I'd
never heard before.  And I found a lot of these expressions quite
delightful....  :-))

           Hmm... IIRC you used "(sic)" with "loose" recently, and I imagine
you know "sic" is used where something looks like an error but isn't.  I'm
forced to conclude you were referring to your keyboard.  Or trying to get my
goat....  ;-)
