Hi yet again, James!  This is the last installment of the current series:

          Oops!  No doubt you meet all kinds in the music business.  I enjoyed
dance gigs... both as a waitress & as a musician... because of the opportunity
for people-watching.  When I was young & foolish, I even enjoyed the challenge
of dodging around the dancers with a loaded tray.  But until recently I didn't
understand what I was seeing to the extent I do now that it has been explained
in a systematic way.  Although the terminology may take some getting used to &
different terminology may be used elsewhere, I'm guessing you have quite a lot
of data in your memory bank from which you can draw your own examples....  :-)

          Okay... and there's the iceberg again!  As an NT, I have to consider
which 10% of what's going on in my head to write about.  I focused on the word
"bagpipe" because it had reminded me of an incident showing how my student & I
were using different reasoning styles.  But Schickele's humour covers a pretty
broad range.  He uses traditional forms in his writing, so that on the surface
it sounds like baroque music.  In reality it's more like MAD magazine....  ;-)

          A pedal tone is a note one octave below the usual working range of a
wind instrument.  On the low brasses, such notes are typically produced when a
bunch of kids from the high school band are fooling around.  But to this day I
haven't heard them played on woodwind instruments... with the exception of the
chanter I mentioned in my story, i.e. the part of the bagpipe which looks more
or less like a recorder.  I understand now that "blow gently" probably doesn't
mean quite the same thing to a clarinet player as it does to a bagpipe player,
but neither of us realized it then.  So there I was, open to new experiences &
curious about how the chanter worked, while my student was earnestly trying to
preserve a centuries-old tradition with a set of very strict rules.  As far as
he was concerned I'd made a faux pas roughly equivalent to laughing in church,
and it reflected on his own skill as a teacher.  SJ?  Most definitely....  :-)

          He didn't use the word "correct" there... but I used it the way I've
heard other SJ's use it.  (The first time I heard this my reaction... although
unspoken... was "Huh?")  It often comes across as a milder version of "should"
in friend-to-friend interactions.  When Nora was three, for example, the five-
year-old daughter of a couple we'd known for years grabbed a crayon out of her
hand & said "Let me show you the correct way to play with crayons!"  We hadn't
realized until we became parents ourselves how [SJ/type "A"] these people were
and how our parenting style differed.  I was aghast at the reverberations from
my childhood which they elicited.  IMHO play is a method of learning about the
world & sharpening one's skills.  Mother Nature, in her wisdom, has programmed
it into the young of our own & other species and has made it fun so they'll be
intuitively drawn to it.  Nora didn't try to eat the crayons or write on walls
... and she devised good learning strategies for herself.  Why would I want to
interfere, if no humans or precious possessions were harmed in the experiment?
To many SJ's, however, learning & fun seem to be mutually exclusive... (sigh).
