Ärende: Introductions... 2A.

I heard in a movie, "If I had it all to do over, I would have taken better care
of my teeth." <G>

AH> Correct. And yes, I'm a retired English teacher...
 AH> [grin].

I better watch my pdq's. <L> Never was much of a fan of the language. Math and
physics type myself. You should get a kick out of my next message about the
Roman numerals then.

JB> as an option, the only option available is for me to

There's a reason they call it a practise. Maybe one day they'll get it right.

AH> far... i.e. resorting to drugs and/or surgery as little as
AH> possible... is a third option. That way nothing is

The "Do over" would be a welcome option. When someone says the "C" word, you
prepare yourself for the worst. I think I can safely say that it worked out
better than that for both of us, but what are you gonna do? Maybe one day...
It's just the proliferation of this cluster of diseases we call cancer that
concerns me. Life expectancy is going down, did you hear?

JB> That's a new one on me. "Kitchen sink percussion." As

AH> You got it! I started using the term years ago as a
AH> shorthand way of saying "everything but the kitchen sink"...

The pots and pans were my first drum set. A wooden spoon and a spatula made
fair sticks.

AH> i.e. all the toys which don't come with the standard drum set &
AH> don't cost a gazillion dollars. As to the coffee maker basket,
AH> why not?? I like what Eric Nagler & Rick Scott do with
AH> ordinary household objects, and I imagine you could
AH> probably use the sink too.... :-))

I've never heard of them. I think it was Steve Elliovsen I saw sauntering down
a back-ally once, bangin' on anything that he came across. Comes to mind a
Rubbermaid commercial. The score - a REALLY good one - was performed on nothing
but rubbermaid products! Just this evening, I saw a short subject about a team
of percussionists on ZED TV. The premise was that they used anything in a room
to make noise. Even a blender, and egg mixer, shaving foam being expelled from
a can...

I forget exactly now, but if you've ever heard a cuiica, [SP?] it was the same
type of instrument I made out of the coffee basket. The theme song from
Barretta used it prevalently.

AH> [In reference to the comment "I could write a book."]
 JB>  I've got the time to read it. <-;

AH> Wonderful! This is where I write most often about
AH> our daily life. I tried keeping a journal... but I get
AH> tired of talking to myself. I need input from folks like
AH> you to give me ideas, and inspire me to stick with it....
 AH> :-)

If I'm your inspiration, it should be quite a convoluted read. <-|

JB> I can only report on what is working for me. Like I
JB> said elsewhere, get the doctor to advise you. For me,
JB> the muscle stretch was intuitive, but TOTALLY counter-
 JB> productive.

AH> Uh-huh. Nora has a lot of intuitive ideas about such
AH> things, and I'm impressed by how often they are exactly right
AH> for her. But at the same time I realize they must be tempered
AH> with some awareness of physiology... a subject I know very
AH> little more about than Nora does. It was a physiotherapist

The knowledge I have is a hodge-podge of things picked up from martial arts,
but mostly yoga. It was serving me well until I ran into this nerve situation.
Post op, I never regained flexibility.

AH> who told us she needed to stretch certain muscles. Now I'm
AH> asking just about everybody we know who has an
AH> understanding of what's involved how best to go about doing
AH> this because Nora wants to do essentially what you did...
AH> she keeps stretching until some reflex kicks in which says
AH> "That's enough!" and makes her toes curl or something. In
AH> many cases I have to help her, though, so I can back off
AH> and try again. She gets annoyed with me, but I think it's
 AH> safer that way.... :-)

It is a muscular tension you are dealing with there, right? If that's the case,
I would try anything yoga related, or ti-chi. [SP?} Not so much getting her to
jump around in the park, as I suspect that is not an option, but when some of
the movements are isolated, they can be a great way to loosen things up. Just
be careful of the yoga Yoda you listen to. I've heard there can be quite the
hacks out there.

My sister is a Core Strength Technician, (...Or something along those lines.
Regardless, she went to school for some time, and the whole family is addicted
to over-achieving.) that has her teaching Palates. It drives her crazy when she
sees me do some of the weirder yoga moves I've picked up, but they feel good,
have no pain component for me, and are efficient. (The most important part for
me.)

Last time I cornered her for an analysis, after she asked all the questions she
could, I heard a pat, "In Palates, we only work on one muscle at a time." "Ya,
but am I doing anything I shouldn't?" "Unless it hurts your (This and that...)"

But it sounds like you are well supervised, so I don't have to worry about Nora
as I do Wayne C. He hasn't seen a doctor in 5 years! Complain as I have about
our health care system, at least it is publicly funded and available.
