PATA (old style) and SATA (new style) are both IDE... IDE stands for Integrated
Device Electronics which simply means that instead of having a separate
controller card taking a slot like we had with MFM and RLL drives, the
controller card is built on the HD combining the HD's interface board and the
controller card into one... then a cable goes from the drive to connect to an
interface card in a slot... now days that interface card is built onto the
motherboard which frees up a slot... the difference between PATA and SATA is
that PATA is parallel and transfers the bits making the bytes of data all at
the same time... SATA is serial and streams the bits in a single line...
parallel is faster but takes more work to happen... serial is easier since the
stream of bytes don't need to be split into channels... especially so since the
data is read in serial fashion from the drive platters anyway...
