Ärende: Crash !

Hello Jay!

I agree with you for the most part..

I ran a BBS 24/7 for 18 years or so
from the late 70's until 1996 or so
and went thru 40 or 50 hard drives in that time period,
most of the MFM drives lasted about 4-6 months,
I used 4 HD at a time..

Not all the Seagate HD's that I used had the
stiction problem, and some were Replace under Warranty..

A Tech Support responce that I got was that HD
were Assembled Manually at that time, and that
the Lubricant was in the Spindle that the Platters
were attached to, and many of the Hub Spindles conntained
too much Lubricant and would leak out onto the Platters
and onto the Heads, when over heated.. ??

 JE>
GV>> The Gelled Lubricat would Stick the platters

 JE>
JE> Whoa! How on earth would platters stick together?
JE> Multiple platter HDs had RW heads BETWEEN the platters - remember?
JE> Heads sticking to platters - you betcha!
 JE>

Hmmm.. I guess it depended on the Amount of
Lubricant that leaked out between the Platters??

GV>> Lube would Stick the Read/Write Heads to the

GV>> to keep the Read/Write Head from laying

 JE>
JE> Correct - there were "parking" routines for that.
 JE>
 JE>
 JE>
GV>> The ONLY two Practical solutions to Stiction was:
 JE>
GV>> 1.) Leave the Computer ON 24/7 as most BBS
GV>> Sysops were prone to do, or
 JE>
GV>> 2.) Replace the HD with a different Brand HD
 JE>
JE> Well, there was one other sometimes solution:
JE> Bang on the side of the computer case on startup!
 JE>
 JE>
GV>> Seagate HD in the Late 1970's and early 1980's
GV>> seemed to be the primary HD with Stiction..
