I'm running a Microsoft Wireless Base Station (MN-700) here at home- the older
(802.11b) Linksys is up at Sechelt. Microsoft uses the jargon:

Wireless network name (SSID):

and on its Wireless Settings setup page has:

[x] Broadcast wireless network name (SSID) (Recommended)

The webpage: http://isp.webopedia.com/TERM/S/SSID.html defines SSID as 'Service
Set Identifier'- a unique identifier attached to the header of packets sent
over a WLAN that acts as a password when a mobile device tries to connect....
the SSID differentiates one WLAN from another-- a device will not be permitted
to join... unless it can provide the unique SSID.

Given that, WiFi devices that announce the SSID sort of defeat the purpose of
it to limit who can 'join'. However, the webopedia page goes on to note:

"Because an SSID can be sniffed in plain text from a packet it does not supply
any security to the network."

Your DLink may refer to the SSID as 'Wireless Network Name' or something
similar, and may use some other phrase meaning broadcast... if you want to make
a series of screen captures of the various setup screens, you could email them
to me if you want.

(And no, I didn't get the Realport card from you; you sent some Xircom and
older Linksys cards... I got the Realport from Xircom for review around 1999 or
so, when it was cutting-edge (and cost around CDN$500).
