MR> Though your theory of the gelled lubricant seems reasonable and
MR> plausible it is not the only one nor the best explanation of stiction.
MR> I read it explained that if the head surface became so polished that

MR> glues. You can observe a similar effect with two pieces of flat glass,

 MR> inbetween the surfaces.

You Theory is also Correct, I've seen proof of both theory's

as far as the Leaking Lube theory, I have Physically
dis-assembled Several Seagte HD that Crashed with Stiction
and were no longer under warranty and all my bag of tricks
including Freezing did not revive them..

The results of my Dis-assembleling the Crashed HD,
one one HD showed that there was evidence of Lube leakage from
the Spindle Hub onto two of the Platters out about
halfway on one plater, and about 3/4 inch on the other
and one Read/Write head had Lube Splattered all over
one side of the read/write head..

ON another HD's the Leakage Only involved one Plater
and the Read/Write head that was gelled to the Platter..

MR> In addition a hard disk head has some pressure bearing down on it and
MR> it must take off from the platter in order to function properly. This
MR> head down force further worsens the stiction problem by forcing the
MR> molecular effect into more intimate contact and air has great
MR> difficulty getting inbetween the surfaces. You will notice stiction
MR> didn't happen with new drives. If the seeping lubricant was at fault
MR> then new drives would have suffered from stiction too. Stiction only
MR> came about after a number of head parking cycles had worn the surfaces
MR> perfectly flat. The cure for stiction is to simply make the head
MR> surface less than perfectly flat.

Hmmm... Here is another side to the Gravity and centrifical
effect on the Head pressure..

Way back in the early 1980's, there was a School of thouht
that standing or Mounting the Hard drive on edge, intead
on laying Flat amy reduce the Head pressure on the platters.

I notice that one one HD that was Formated Standing on Edge
would not Bootup when Re-Installed laying Flat??
go figure.. But Un-installing it and remounting it on edge,
it Booted up again and ran fine..
