Hello All,

I've just completed a fresh install of Windows XP Pro with SP2 and
Microsoft Office 2003 (took me three attempts to get it "right").  I'm sure
glad that I don't have to do this exercise too often -- what a bloody
chore...

I estimate that I have between 35 to 40 percent of my software installed.

Tom W. was/is correct!!!  The Microsoft firewall is one of the most useless
pieces of garbage that Microsoft has ever released to the consuming public!
I am actually looking forward to installing the ZoneAlarm Internet Security
Suite just so I can have the pleasure of disabling Micro$oft's firewall!!!

I know that ZoneAlarm _should_ have been one of my first installations, but
I had to postpone it until I was able to afford the licensing fee -- that
was just now completed.  ZA is currently performing a virus scan with an
Anti-Spyware operation pending and then I'll be checking out the rest of
the ZASS...

Something else that Charles S. recommended that I perform _before_ I do the
fresh install -- upgrade the BIOS...  I went to the Gigabyte website and
downloaded the BIOS upgrade file for this GA-7ZX (Rev. 5.0) motherboard.
Apparently, I can upgrade my Duron 750MHz CPU to a AthlonXP 1500 Palomino,
or a Athlon 1.4G, or a Athlon 1.3G...  Should be a reasonable speed
increase despite being restricted to a 200 Front Side Bus.  I'm going to
wait for ninety days before I attempt this because of the Microsoft
hardware change detection process (I forget the proper MS terminology, so
someone may enlighten me here).

I just completed the WinXP network hookup so that it could "talk" to the
Win2K box - Win2K could always see the XP machine but not vice versa (I
hate this getting old business - I'm forgetting stuff that I knew at one
time).  On the XP, I finally typed in the name of a W2K resource that I
knew existed and the XP woke up to find all the shared folders on the W2K
box and now all is well.

I have currently encountered one niggling problem (I'm sure there will be
others).  I'm trying to set up my DOS version of QEdit to run on XP.  I've
done: My Computer -> Properties -> Advanced -> Environment Variables ->
System Variables -> User Variables and System Variables to edit the path
and variable names.  Then, when I try to run QEdit, I get "File not found".
I even deleted to QEdit PIF file and created a new one from the QEdit
properties.  I still haven't cracked it.  I would appreciate some
suggestions, please.
