Hello All,

In case you're wondering about the subject line, it is an acronym for
Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing...

Essentially, it is a screensaver that will permit the Berkeley University
to "borrow" your CPU processing power so that they can run computations on
your computer for various research projects they are conducting.  See:

I loaned them the Windows 2000 Pro CPU for about two years for two of their
projects - SETI@home and EINSTEIN@home.  I recently removed all their
programs from the W2K box!  I was trying to create an index file for a very
large database and I left the computer running all night, to create the
index, while I went to work.  I returned thirteen hours later to check on
the progress of the indexing -- Einstein was doing its thing on my screen
(which _should_ have been okay since there was no keyboard activity at that
time).  Moving the mouse trackball _should_ have terminated Einstein and
put me into the indexer, but, NO RESPONSE.  I pressed a down arrow key, up
arrow key, page down, page up, but Einstein was a working fool and
continued as if I wasn't there.

I was finally able to get into the Windows Task Manager and before I
terminated the BOINC process, I decided to check the Performance tab.
Something was using 100% of the CPU and the MEM usage was extremely high as
well.  I terminated BOINC, went to the Task Control panel and closed all
the BOINC tasks -- that _should_ have returned control to me.  I started
getting these annoying popups that specific IP addresses were trying to
access the system but were unable to do so and would I enable the BOINC
Manager.  I rebooted the computer, went into the Add/Remove applet and
removed BOINC (and all associated applications) and afterwards, I used
Total Uninstall 3 (thank you Charles A. for the very solid recommendation)
and removed ALL traces that it ever existed on my computer.

Now, when I run the inexing program, the CPU usage fluctuates between 4%
and 37% -- much more acceptable and no control problems.
