Hello Robert -

AZ>>> In general, I would agree-- most users could everything
AZ>>> the need to do on a Pentium II-era system running
AZ>>> Win98SE-- I would argue about older systems since most
AZ>>> users want to connect USB devices such as newer printers
AZ>>> or digital cameras, which most often won't work with
AZ>>> these older OS versions.

RF>> That's true, and perhaps even more limiting are their
RF>> capabilities for using broadband and wireless networking.

CA>> Not true.

RF> :-)

RF>> Getting ISP software that supports even Win98 can now be a
RF>> problem.

CA>> No, not really. WFWG (W3.11) is known to be a very
CA>> reliable and stable networking OS.

RF> WFWG was designed for the LAN. It required an add-on (MS
RF> TCP/IP) to provide DHCP support. Of course, that was before
RF> the era of broadband and its protocols, such as PPPoE. A
RF> router that understands PPPoE would allow WFWG to use DHCP,
RF> but a direct connection to the cable/dsl modem would be
RF> problematic. My ISP (AT&T) provides a separate software
RF> "adapter" (Enternet 300) for this.

By your own admission WFWG is doable on broadband, not "even
more limiting are their capabilities".

RF>> Wireless support for pre-Win98 is also quite minimal.

"Minimal" is not "non-existent". You have a dislike for legacy
Windows OS or something?

CA>> Wireless is not a requirement in the REAL world anymore
CA>> than a 52" TV screen is required. If hardware cannot
CA>> support W9x for wireless connections then it is defective
CA>> hardware.

RF> Do you live in the real world? :-) Visit one of your local
RF> retailers when you get out sometime, and you'll find that
RF> their inventory is heavily wireless.

I won't enumerate what I "see" that is absurb but any adult
realizes that what a retailer puts out for display has little
to no correlation to what is 'best' or even 'good'.

RF> I would venture that wireless sales exceed wired on the
RF> order of 50 to 1.

Now you're "venturing" to create statistics from your colorful
imagination. I know quite a few here and elsewhere that are
very paranoid about wireless and wouldn't install it until the
last hard-wired components were long since disintegrated by the
ravages of time.

RF>> If a broadband network is already setup, getting Win95/98
RF>> to utilize it via a wired connection should be possible,
RF>> but don't include Win3.1 in that group, since it doesn't
RF>> support DHCP.

CA>> Wrong again:

CA>> http://www.dhcp-handbook.com/dhcp_faq.html

CA>> Novell: Client32 for DOS/Windows 3.1 (beta) will use
CA>> either DHCP or BOOTP to get IP parameters.

CA>> Novell: NetWare/IP for DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, and
CA>> Windows NT uses DHCP to obtain IP parameters.

RF> You need to find a more current handbook. :-) Yes Charles,
RF> there *were* expensive third party solutions eons ago. They
RF> were not for broadband, though. Since all of the major OSes
RF> have had native DHCP support for over a decade, I think
RF> it's fairly safe to assume that there is *no* longer any
RF> market for these products. :-) If you did manage to get
RF> your hands on one, it would suffer the same limitations
RF> with respect to broadband protocols, that the MS TCP/IP for
RF> WFWG suffers.

You really don't know any of this to be a fact you are again
using your colorful imagination to presuppose what you cannot
prove.

CA>> I've said it before and I'll say it again - FIDO users
CA>> fake their understanding of networking and anyone who
CA>> believes them is misled most of the time. After some of
CA>> the "opinions" expressed here I seriously wonder how many
CA>> claim to have a network that they don't really have?

RF> Sorry you feel that way. I have a webcam, and my network is
RF> open for viewing via videoconferencing (IM) by appointment.
RF> Appropriate fees may apply. :-)

Who set it up for you?
