I'm back to scanning old slides and negatives and am beating up on the 
poor computer.  The typical scan of one (!) slide takes 2-3 minutes, 
depending on options selected.  If they were all perfectly exposed and 
properly stored with no debris on/in them it would be much faster but 
the amount of post-processing makes this poor li'l ol' dual processor 
Xeon system just bog down.  It would be great if the software would 
actually use both processors for the task but no such luck.  At least I 
can call up some of the more problematic scans into Paint Shop Pro and 
work on them while scanning is going on and see no difference in 
performance of either task.

And, just to prove that I need a faster computer, I can scan two slides 
during the time it takes PSP to apply a digital camera noise filter to 
one image.  I'm not RAM or disk starved (2.5GB RAM and a three disk RAID 
0 array for performance) - the CPU is plugged at full usage for each task...

It may be that Mac hardware and software would actually speed things up 
since graphics manipulation is a primary market...
