I'd have to call that smart.
They were the guys responsible for maintaining your jet
and it seems to me that might have some bearing on keeping you
from falling out of the sky due to inattention to some necessary 
overlooked maintanance detail.

I started out hardware hacking but my situation changed so
now I muck around with the software.

Understanding Linux for me was easy however because it is a very black
and white binary operating system with no shades of grey.
Everything is on or off, yes or no, 0 or 1.

Someone once told me it was the permissions that were 
 the hardest.
chmod +x makes the text file of commands executable ( your first PERL script)
-x it's a text file again and will say "command not recognised"

Can't delete the file? you don't have write priviledge, 
+w filename && rm filename
You just made it writable and removed   ( deleted it)
in a single line from the command line.

"File not found", do you have read permission? chmod +r 
filename as root superuser.
Now it can be seen by user. 

Of course you have to chown the file to do any of these things,
either it is or must be made yours with chown -c wchirnside filename,
now it's mine. ( must be done as root superuser else it ignores you
and thus it is why Linux is so secure.

This I learned while having my stroke and ever so much more.
Started with Debian and moved onto the slightly less forgiving however
better IMO Slackware.

As I do not imagine the Canadian Air Defense Forces allow 
people of less than a fairly high IQ run around in their Sabre jets
I rather imagine you could get pretty proficient with this in
relatively short order.

Seems to me your type would be into power?
For me it is a kick in the seat I can't get from never having 
my Sabre experience ( or any other go fast plane)

Well, it _was_ something to pass the time for a while while I was 
stroking however it's now setup so it does *everything*
I want and has been since six months.
Can't say when I last had to mess with it, it's been a while.
Months in fact.

If I need to add capability I'll just ask the OS a stupid question
in the form of issuing a command ( not as root as that can be very bad
unless you know what you are doing)
from the command line and carefully read the error message 
that generaly says to me something to indicate I was overthinking it.

It's usually just as simple as it seems.

Or check "man dd" which is how you zero out a hard drive or copy ( cp -a)
a file

First couple of letters of any in the alphabet in the command 
line and the tab key twice and all commands starting with those two letters
appear on the screen at the command line in the console. 
Unless you're a user
You have to be root user to fdisk or dd ( zero) the drive or delete 
system files.
Dangerous files are defaulted unavailable to users but root can 
of course alter that on an individual command and user basis.
  
Hey wouldn't want any idiot passing by mucking about with your
Sabre jets' avionics packages or engine would you?
Same with Linux but it defaults to secure.

Reason I went Debian to start was it defaults  to rm   to
the prompt "are you certain you wish to delete this file? y,n

Probably wish to say no ( n) cause otherwise with rm -r /* there went
every single file and all your software deleted recursively.

Slackware doesn't bother asking, say goodbye to your operating system.

There, your first three weeks of Linux training in a single post
from a guy whose brains are all shot to hell ( and from memory too) 
Another post and from me and you'd likely be all set to go and be
answering my dumb questions next week.

I wrote an automated script to do the installation here in about 20 minutes
but to be fair it was after all my second such attempt at writing
one.
Virgin hard drive to set to go in under three hours from booting to the CD. 

I've done it a time or two the result of mistake and the last time just
as practice to see what  little time it could be done in as part of my
somewhat masochistic self disciplined stroke rehabilitation
project.
Lots of mental strain but I gotto keeps some bits of the noodle.

Using a standard Intel chipset motherboard saves hardware grief so
buy an old used Gateway Pentium III or similar board for compatability.
Printer?
Likes postscript whatever that is.
Most printers are WinPrinters, bleck
Same for modems.
I use old and outdate and cheap hardware cards for far better performance  
than XP on a midrange machine

I stay user ( safely unable to destroy by accident) except when
I need to use the videoplayer ( security opening should you be online while
root user)  
 
I've a second user account for ActiveX runtime environment for only a very
few ( 1) trusted site to download music as activeX  is a security hole
so isolated as another user.
Setting this one up was a bit of a bear but than I do not use it much
as I don't grant access to the entire world to my computer casually. 

I've a software firewall so no-one can hack in and mess with my
system.
Yes, it too was free and is about a page and a half of text run
as a executable after making it so.
www.grc.com
has Shields-up which tests the efficacy of your firewall for free.
Windows too however you may not like what you find out  even with Linux.
That's why I put the firewall in.

Yeah, sure is hell gettin old with the old brain cells dying off in droves.
And if I get *really stuck* on something just form a question
about it and submit it to google.

Linux has confused millions before  me and someone (couple tens of thousands)
has already answered my  and your dumb question before and provided the answer.

Solved several Mplayer video player difficulties this way.
  
sorry if this bored you however it's part of my keeping the brain on
top of stuff.
I bet you had to practice flying that Sabre jet too and it appears
you never had a serious mistake or you wouldn't be here.
