You don't HAVe to go there.
KDM, looks like Windows but cleaner, sharper for these old eyes
and it doesn't mess with you.
A half dozen other desktop choices as well and all of them
with a great many options.

I use Konqueror ( browser) a lot for the ease of the file manager 
point and click
and invoking video multimedia and DVDs and CDs and music files.

Any release of Windows.
I've got to understand the workings to be comfortable with my OS. 
windows is closed source and proprietary.
Linux is open source and thus any trouble I have I can just
figure it out, ask someone or google and ask everyone who
has already figured it out.
Or the man pages
Or the Howto pages.
Actualy there is too much help, so much in fact it scares people
away it's so intimidating.

Lots of Linux users play it off as tough to make it apear they
are smarter than they really are. ( I am thinking of two of them now)
It's all in who you approach teaching someone about it.

I had very pleasant tutors, Martin ( firewall) Maurice and Paul
They literally saved my bacon ( grey matter located center above shoulders) 

It all amounts to a lot of intimidation factor however I don't see 
your flight instructor starting you off soloing on an F-86 after
ground school 
( no computerized with virtual reality flight simulators back in the day) no?

This is an old machine I've got here so XP isn't an option as
it's resource and speed of processor hungry.

Hey the F-86 has a kinda retro look too I like to.
