If I had access to a cheap previously-used and pre-installed XP box, I might
have considered that route.  Nevertheless, I am quite adamant NOT to support
(meaning, to purchase) MS product for my own use anymore.  And as you may
have read by now, I sort of talked myself into simply converting my old ME
desktop to Ubuntu, learn to adapt to the new opensource alternatives, and
just transfer some of the win-specific stuff that I don't want to miss using
to my XP Thinkpad.  Everything else can be "ported" to the proposed Ubuntu
pc.

Another plus to converting my ME box to Ubuntu..  I hope to be able to use
the full 768meg ram I recently upped it to from its original 256meg.
Apparently, ME is theoretically limited to using 512meg max.  Sure, people
have been successful in getting ME to work with up to 1gig, but usually that
requires fooling the OS and limiting "what the OS really sees" to 512meg or
LESS.  Plus I hope to be able to use the new AGP 4x 128meg video card that I
got to replace the problematic AGP 2x 64meg card.  I have a feeling that my
old USB scanner may not cooperate, but I am willing to spend money on a
better one anyway.  I can assign the old scanner to my eMachine box.

I can't say that ME has been problematic all the time.  Infact, my
experience has been the contrary. It was a smooth operator for nearly 5
years - that is, before I added more ram and NEWer programs and basically
started to do more stuff with it.  It was however a little nightmare machine
the 1st 1.5 years of use, that is before I learned about the necessary
tweaks to tame it.  After that.. it has been humming along quite nicely.

I'm with you on avoiding hassles and fighting with driver compatibilities.
ME has been cooperating nicely for the most part.  USB compatibility has
been a no-brainer.  That is the main reason I would never consider going
back to Win98 anymore, plus the fact that it too can't utilize more than
256meg ram effectively.

XP pro ain't too bad.  It hums along quite nicely on my Thinkpad.  Not a
single lockup or problem (so far!).

I believe each OS has its place.  I believe it's better to find the best OS
fit for each pc.  My old ME box is now simply more capable than ME allows.
Ubuntu should utilize the full ram without complaints.
