Yup. The router is a b, g and n device and the AP is a g.

Yup again and the g NIC connects rather to the g AP than to the n router.

See above, right now the g (built in card) is connected to the g AP with almost
no signal at all and the n (USB adaptor) is connected to the n router with a
super
good signal. The other laptop in the kitchen with only a g card also connects
to
the g AP although the signal to the n router is much stronger.

I ment that wouldn't it be better to move the phone away from the laptop
instead
of bringing it closer?
