Get used to it-- a real security problem with pre-Vista versions of Windows
(compared to Mac OS X or Linux, for instance) -- despite the convenience to
users-- has been that when a Windows user is logged into an administrative
account, there's been an assumption that they are in control (and aware) of
anything that happens on their computer. 'Drive by' software installations from
malware-hosting websites, email-attachment viruses, and more security
nightmares have proven that isn't the case.

The more secure OS versions don't make that false assumption, and ask users to
confirm software installations (etc).

 GM> Bought a HP 2133 Mini-Note book...

I had one on loan from HP for a month and quite liked it. Good build-quality,
nice design, reasonably good performance for a mini-notebook, at a reasonable
price point.

See above. The Vista designers went a bit over the top (in my opinion) in
deciding what requires explicit user permission-- for instance, renaming,
deleting, or moving an icon in the All Users desktop or Start Menu is not of
the same sort of seriousness as installing software that modifies system
settings-- but both get the attention from Vista's UAC. It's easy to turn UAC
off, but I'd recommend against that, for the reasons I described above.

That's right... if SP4 is installed, SP1/2/3 are not needed.

MSCONFIG is not included with Win2000-- the XP version works on a W2000 system,
however, and can be simply copied over.

 GM> again?

Interesting question... try it and let us know!
