In Win9x/ME what you want is easy-- right-click on Network Neighborhood, go to
the Identification tab, and change the Workgroup name.

In Win2000/XP, it's harder to do... and running XP's 'Set up a Home or Office
Network' wizard always resets it to MSHOME. Here's one way to do it in XP:

-- right-click on My Computer and choose Properties from the popup menu. Go to
the Computer Name tab.
-- Click the Change button. This opens a dialogue box that allows you to set
the Computer Name, and identify it as a member of a Domain or a Workgroup.

Now you can type in your desired Workgroup name... note that you'll want to
repeat for each computer on your home network.

I don't know if there's a minimum length for a Workgroup name... for about a
decade now, my home network Workgroup has been named 'AD_HOC' (after a band I
played with in the late 1970's)... and at my school, the Workgroup is named
after my classroom number: ROOM102
