No, it resides initially in the MBR and then in the Linux partition (the 
boot loader in the MBR locates the main portion of the boot process 
loaded as a function of installing Linux).  C: is a MS definition of a 
partition which is based on the physical hard drive.  C: could be the 
first, last or any other partition on any hard drive installed.  Major 
difference.

hd = hard drive, specifically IDE.  The newer Linux kernels now treat 
most drives as SCSI, just as Windows does.  The new nomenclature is sd 
for SCSI disk.  If you ran the commands to discover where Linux was 
installed (as noted in the link I provided), however, the answer would 
still be hd since it's referring to the physical drive(s) rather than 
one accessed with a driver.

Depends on the BIOS - as you've found on at least one of your computers, 
you can boot off a second drive.  Also, the BIOS simply looks for the 
MBR on the target drive, coded with the location of the main boot code, 
and passes control to it to do the rest of the loading.  In this case, 
since you're booting off the first drive (NOT C:) and passing control to 
the second drive where Linux is installed, the MBR runs and loads GRUB 
from the Linux installation.  I'd expect your system to use hd1,0 
(zero-based identification so this would be the second hard drive, first 
partition.
