Ärende: Grub redone - take 2 !
===============================
Jeff, good morning.

JP> I presumed that the GRUB loader sits
JP> on C:\, let me know if my presumption is proper.

JG> No, it resides initially in the MBR and then in the Linux partition (the
JG> boot loader in the MBR locates the main portion of the boot process
JG> loaded as a function of installing Linux). C: is a MS definition of a
JG> partition which is based on the physical hard drive. C: could be the
JG> first, last or any other partition on any hard drive installed. Major
 JG> difference.

As far as BIOS is concerned, the MBR is on C:\ or to put it in a more recent
definition, the first partition, being a real partition on a one HD system or
any HD on a twin HD system. The important line in my mind is what triggers the
boot, the BIOS CMOS is programmed to look for the C:\ HD, I fancy that
installing U'u can not modify this IC.

 >> This is where I had some hesitation, I am not comfortable with these
 >> definition yet, hd?.? I even have a hard time installing U'u when it
 >> ask what drive to use.

JG> hd = hard drive, specifically IDE. The newer Linux kernels now treat
JG> most drives as SCSI, just as Windows does. The new nomenclature is sd
JG> for SCSI disk. If you ran the commands to discover where Linux was
JG> installed (as noted in the link I provided), however, the answer would
JG> still be hd since it's referring to the physical drive(s) rather than
JG> one accessed with a driver.

I wish that things would be more standardized here too. hd0,1 ! I know that 0
is a value in binary language but why not have the 1 also a 0, to be more logic
? It is not looking for the second partition, or is it ?

JG> Depends on the BIOS - as you've found on at least one of your computers,
JG> you can boot off a second drive. Also, the BIOS simply looks for the
JG> MBR on the target drive, coded with the location of the main boot code,
JG> and passes control to it to do the rest of the loading. In this case,
JG> since you're booting off the first drive (NOT C:) and passing control to
JG> the second drive where Linux is installed, the MBR runs and loads GRUB
JG> from the Linux installation. I'd expect your system to use hd1,0
JG> (zero-based identification so this would be the second hard drive, first
 JG> partition.

Things are getting a little less (?) muddy now. I think that I have fooled you
a little, I do not do any mail here off IE, not in the least, all my three
Athlon systems run twin HDs, the first one is on XPP and the second one is
running U'u and TB, I use this every morning as it does quite nicely. GRUB does
nicely too, now that it is redone.

You say that the MBR directs the loading to hd1,0, why is the text that you
pointed me to, mention that the GRUB would be sent to hd0,1 ? Why not hd0,0 ?
There is the only one partition of the C:\ !

Are you ever the patient man !
