Hello Gerald -

--8<--cut

GM>>> I looked at the most recent NSW (with two versions of
GM>>> Ghost included) package, put it back on the shelf and
GM>>> resisted _all_ temptation to buy any Symantec product.
GM>>> ;-)) The price was respectable enough but I'd rather get
GM>>> a lobotomy for my money.

CA>> Symantec, and others, are getting trickier. They offer
CA>> mail-in rebates then you find out later it is only for
CA>> 'upgrades' from an earlier version. :-(

GM> I think that is unethical (if it's not clearly stated on
GM> the outside of the package, _before_ you purchase it), but
GM> it must be legal, otherwise they would be in courts
GM> defending themselves against fraud and lawsuits...

I doubt it's legal it's just that no one wants to fight
Symantec in court for $30? You'd be surprised how many people
_think_ you can purchase Microsoft's XP install for $180US.
That's the 'upgrade' from 'home' to 'pro', not a full install.

--8<--cut

GM>>> Aren't you just the bearer of such good news? <g> Not
GM>>> much of an incentive to purchase / try the product.

CA>> Well the upside is that I muddled through the user
CA>> interface and documentation well enough to be using
CA>> BootitNG and I have restored my OS partition no less than
CA>> 15 times using BooitNG's image copies. If I can do it I
CA>> guess most people can do it?

GM> Then there is hope for me... <grin>

Or anyone willing to try it. :-)

GM>>> Have they given any indication that they intend to put
GM>>> their documentation into "layman" terms and clarify any
GM>>> confusion?

CA>> I heard a rumor about that but from a third party not
CA>> directly connected with Terrabyte. Possibly from Langa?

GM> I just checked the Langa site and found no mention of
GM> Terrabyte or BootitNG (unless it was hidden in some
GM> article) in the Headlines...

I have troubles searching his website too. He may have used
BING or some other contraction of the name but I can guarantee
you he has mentioned BootitNG many times the past year or so.

GM> [snip]

CA>>>> Image for Windows uses a windows GUI interface to create
CA>>>> the same image files BootitNG creates but also requires
CA>>>> the 'lock' (free) software Terrabyte offers to lock
CA>>>> Windows while the image is being written. IFW is a bit
CA>>>> less expensive but won't do the multiboot, partitioning,
CA>>>> etc. that BootitNG can do. I see no reason to not get
CA>>>> the full magilla myself and have no use for IFW here now
CA>>>> that I have BootitNG installed. :-)

GM>>> I'm intrigued.

CA>> Yes, it sounds interesting to me too but I'm not real
CA>> happy about having to lock files during the image creation
CA>> process. Either way, using IFW or BootitNG, the machine is
CA>> tied up and cannot be used for anything else during the
CA>> image creation.

GM> I think it's perfectly acceptable to have locked files
GM> during the image creation process. I know that I wouldn't
GM> want to chance a possibility of file corruption with a file
GM> being written to / changed while I was creating a backup.
GM> What would be the purpose of creating a backup if you
GM> wanted to modify the file while it was being backed up?

True. What I meant was I'm not so sure locking the file would
work out as well as image copying from BootitNG's own OS with
Windows totally shut down.

GM> If the machine is "tied up" during the image creation
GM> process, go outside and play with the dog / kids, take a
GM> walk, or, in your case, use one of the other machines
GM> (you're not tying up _ALL_ the machines when you're
GM> creating the images, are you?). ;-))

Unfortunately my other machines are 140 miles away from where I
am right now. I need to go get them one day before it becomes a
problem for me. I miss them. :-)

GM>>> I'll have to go back to their site and investigate the
GM>>> upgrade policy

CA>> I don't recall what their update policy is. I've never
CA>> updated mine since what works I don't mess with (usually).
CA>> :-)

GM> I can see that I have much to learn from you. <g>

I'm becoming one of those who has forgotten more than I can
remember which was my motivation to create my W31/DOS website
before I forgot that information as well. A gallon of
information in a teacup sized brain makes for a great deal of
'spillage'. :-)
