Hello Gerald -

GM>>> The repair / recovery aspect was the major reason why I
GM>>> chose _not_ to use any NTFS. I was informed that NTFS was
GM>>> not without its problems...

CA>> I should mention here that W2K and XP use NTFSv5 which is
CA>> not the same as the older NT version of NTFS.

GM> Then it shouldn't be a problem for me. Number one, I don't
GM> have any older versions of NT

I mentioned that fact because there is software 'out there'
written for NTFS that _may_ not play nice with NTFSv5. That a
program is reputed to work for 'NT' does not automatically mean
it should be used on a W2K or XP machine.

GM> and number two, I don't anticipate switching to NTFS.

You might change your mind. NTFS does seem faster than FAT32 (I
have both here on this machine) and it fragments more slowly
and defrags faster. Not a big deal but that tells me it's a
more 'orderly' file system than FAT32 is. I could be wrong,
just an educated guess really.

--8<--cut

CA>> I haven't tried to setup networking on this W2K machine
CA>> yet so am not familiar with what is installed and what is
CA>> optional.

GM> I will have another opportunity to find out (read on).

GM>>> Aside from the slightly annoying printer problem, I get
GM>>> sporadic 'Access denied' messages when attempting to
GM>>> connect to a drive/directory on either machine. This is
GM>>> one annoyance that I really want to fix! Any suggestions?

CA>> Sounds like what Alan was describing before he added
CA>> NetBEUI to the 'mix'. :-)

GM> If your system doesn't trash my e-mail to you (you will
GM> find that the e-mail address for addison.kimmel has been
GM> replaced by gerald.miller), you'll note that the current
GM> W2K system is 'dead in the water'.

Yes. I just read your email earlier today.

GM> I'm not sure (yet), but I think some malware got onto my
GM> system and attempted to link with an 'unknown' network.
GM> Zonealarm Pro caught the attempt and I put that network
GM> into the Internet zone by denying access to that network. I
GM> ran IPCONFIG /ALL and found that the local IP address had
GM> changed from 192.168.xx.xxx to 169.254.xx.xx _and_ then
GM> things went from bad to worse -- keyboard lockup, web
GM> browser wouldn't work, mail client wouldn't work, ZAP
GM> client wouldn't load..... I've disconnected the network
GM> cable from the router and taken W2K offline until I can
GM> thoroughly investigate these problems.

My thoughts are that when changing your workgroup names you
inadvertently enabled DHCP or something along those lines that
attempted to add your ISP to your 'network neighborhood' bypassing
ZA? How this happened I do not know but that's my first guess.
:-)

GM> I will purchase another HDD (I don't want to rework the
GM> existing HD because I hope to recover some data) and redo
GM> the Win2K install. This time, I will keep a detailed
GM> written account of the install and the other processes.

GM> And, my employer has seen fit to change my work schedule,
GM> AGAIN, so this may take longer to fix! :-((

If it makes you feel any better, I have trashed my W2K
partition 15 times over the past 2 years or so while changing
configurations and tweaking or adding/removing third party
software. It happens and BootitNG has saved my bacon all 15
times. :-)
