The reason they "slow" with age, or, more specifically, use, is the need 
to erase the cells before reuse.  When you first get one, they're all 
erased and ready to go.  Writing data and then reusing the cell(s) 
require an erase first.  Those documents talk about incorporating 
functions in both the command structure as well as firmware to 
proactively perform the erase before it becomes necessary to do so. 
This would usually be done when activity is low so the user is never 
aware of the operation and slowness that can occur.  Like anything else, 
attacking the problem before it's an issue always works better.

You could, potentially, perform a complete erase yourself but it'd be 
better for the device to do it by itself without the need to remember to 
do it manually.

Hah!  And you thought Windows was the savior of all devices!  ;)  I 
haven't used W7 much and probably won't.  I'm just putzing around with 
it for grins.

Oh, yeas, I won't replace it till it dies.  I've had to replace rollers 
in other HP printers (networked ones that got a lot of use) but never on 
this little thing.  Maybe it's been used too little but after nearly 15 
years you'd think they'd be hardening.  You can frequently just clean 
the rollers so paper dust, etc. is removed, giving at least a clean 
rubber surface.  On the network printers I was able to swap them around 
so the direction of rotation was reversed and get additional life from 
them.  I suspect we can't easily do that with these printers.

Feel free to keep all their poop up there.  Driving and walking on 
parking lots that have geese populations is rather disgusting...
