Hello Gerald -

--8<--cut

GM>>> I think that is unethical (if it's not clearly stated on
GM>>> the outside of the package, _before_ you purchase it),
GM>>> but it must be legal, otherwise they would be in courts
GM>>> defending themselves against fraud and lawsuits...

CA>> I doubt it's legal it's just that no one wants to fight
CA>> Symantec in court for $30?

GM> I thought the Amurican court systems were notorious for
GM> their use of "class action" lawsuits?

The corporations are notorious for stealing all they can get
until they get caught then they buy their way out of prison and
resume their theft(s).

CA>> You'd be surprised how many people _think_ you can
CA>> purchase Microsoft's XP install for $180US. That's the
CA>> 'upgrade' from 'home' to 'pro', not a full install.

GM> Which may be a "fair" price when I researched a full OEM XP
GM> Pro CD-ROM was $230.00CDN and a full retail XP Pro CD-ROM
GM> started at $420.00CDN and went up. Gawd help anyone that
GM> had to do a full reinstall when all they have is the
GM> "recovery" 'home' CD and the 'upgrade' 'Pro' CD.

Not the fairness of the price I'm referring to but the
impression that they own a 'full' version of XP Pro when they
do not.

GM> [Re BootitNG]

--8<--cut

GM> I guess I procrastinated too long. With my recent
GM> experience of W2K, I should have jumped on the BING some
GM> time ago... :((

I was thinking that same thing but didn't want to say it. ;-)

--8<--cut

GM>>> I think it's perfectly acceptable to have locked files
GM>>> during the image creation process. I know that I wouldn't
GM>>> want to chance a possibility of file corruption with a
GM>>> file being written to / changed while I was creating a
GM>>> backup. What would be the purpose of creating a backup if
GM>>> you wanted to modify the file while it was being backed
GM>>> up?

CA>> True. What I meant was I'm not so sure locking the file
CA>> would work out as well as image copying from BootitNG's
CA>> own OS with Windows totally shut down.

GM> You lost me again. Boot from a CD (or diskette) containing
GM> BootitNG's own OS without Windows being functional?

Sorry, I forget that few know how BootitNG is setup to be used.

BootitNG installs itself onto a small 8 meg partition of your
hard drive. When you turn your machine on it boots to BootitNG
_not_ to W2K or 'other'. You get a menu onscreen (mouseable) to
select one of your installed OS to boot into or the BootitNG
'maintenance' screen. At this point Windows is not executing
only the BootitNG OS (whatever that is?).

From that maintenance screen you can repartition, add
partitions, install another OS to boot to, modify the
multi-boot menu, and do image copies of any partition on the
hard drive including Linux and others if you have them.

The image creation and restore is 'generic' in that BootitNG
does not care what it is it just 'photographs' the partition
and writes a compressed copy to wherever you direct it to. I
write my W2K image copies to my FAT32 partition and then write
my FAT32/DOS to my W2K NTFSv5 partition directing BootitNG to
split this into CD sized chunks. From there I boot into W2K and
burn those chunks to CDs.

GM>>> If the machine is "tied up" during the image creation
GM>>> process, go outside and play with the dog / kids, take a
GM>>> walk, or, in your case, use one of the other machines
GM>>> (you're not tying up _ALL_ the machines when you're
GM>>> creating the images, are you?).

GM>> > ;-))

CA>> Unfortunately my other machines are 140 miles away from
CA>> where I am right now. I need to go get them one day before
CA>> it becomes a problem for me. I miss them. :-)

GM> If my wife was 140 miles away from where I am, I'd miss
GM> her. <g>

I've been married twice - I don't miss either of them.

GM> These are machines, Charles. Get one or two put on a
GM> Greyhound... :))

I've spent more happy hours with those machines than I ever did
with either of my wives and why buy love when you can rent?

GM> [snip]

GM>>> I can see that I have much to learn from you. <g>

CA>> I'm becoming one of those who has forgotten more than I
CA>> can remember which was my motivation to create my W31/DOS
CA>> website before I forgot that information as well. A gallon
CA>> of information in a teacup sized brain makes for a great
CA>> deal of 'spillage'. :-)

GM> What Greek spent his entire life searching for an honest
GM> man? Somebody wanna tell him I found the guy? <G,D&RFC>
