Hello Gerald -

--8<--cut

CA>>>> I should mention here that W2K and XP use NTFSv5 which
CA>>>> is not the same as the older NT version of NTFS.

GM>>> Then it shouldn't be a problem for me. Number one, I
GM>>> don't have any older versions of NT

CA>> I mentioned that fact because there is software 'out
CA>> there' written for NTFS that _may_ not play nice with
CA>> NTFSv5. That a program is reputed to work for 'NT' does
CA>> not automatically mean it should be used on a W2K or XP
CA>> machine.

GM> Now, this makes more sense. Please forgive me for being so
GM> 'persnickety' in my previous message.

No problem. I might also mention that the registry for W2K and
XP uses 'hives' and is split into seven parts while other
versions of Windows used only one large registry file. Standard
Windows registry utilities might damage your registry.

GM>>> and number two, I don't anticipate switching to NTFS.

CA>> You might change your mind. NTFS does seem faster than
CA>> FAT32 (I have both here on this machine) and it fragments
CA>> more slowly and defrags faster. Not a big deal but that
CA>> tells me it's a more 'orderly' file system than FAT32 is.
CA>> I could be wrong, just an educated guess really.

GM> I'll see what happens when I start shaking everything up
GM> again. No promises.

I can't say that disaster recovery with NTFSv5 is even close to
where it should be. It's embarassing how little there is
available out there to help and now that Longhorn is going to
_another_ proprietary format I doubt NTFSv5 will _ever_ have
the rich cornucopia of alternative utlities to assist in
disaster recovery. I lean _hard_ on BootitNG to save my bacon.
:-)

--8<--cut

GM>>> I'm not sure (yet), but I think some malware got onto my
GM>>> system and attempted to link with an 'unknown' network.

--8<--cut

CA>> My thoughts are that when changing your workgroup names
CA>> you inadvertently enabled DHCP or something along those
CA>> lines that attempted to add your ISP to your 'network
CA>> neighborhood' bypassing ZA? How this happened I do not
CA>> know but that's my first guess. :-)

GM> My understanding is that (with a cable network) DHCP is
GM> enabled when you see the screen (prior to Logon) that says
GM> "Searching for Network..." and I'm unaware that I was
GM> supposed to disable DHCP _before_ changing the workgroup
GM> name. Can't see how changing the workgroup name would make
GM> DHCP want to add my ISP to my network neighborhood -- it
GM> would have to go through two firewalls to do that -- ZA
GM> (software firewall) and router (hardware firewall) and the
GM> ISP is on the Internet side of everything -- locked out.

Based on my limited experience with DHCP I'm just guessing that
the option to turn it on/off appears on the same menus that
other options reside on. Clicking 'apply' without being aware
of _all_ of the bullets checked etc. can make unwanted changes?
DHCP is an automated configuration process where computers
exchange network information and reset it automatically.

GM>>> I will purchase another HDD (I don't want to rework the
GM>>> existing HD because I hope to recover some data) and redo
GM>>> the Win2K install. This time, I will keep a detailed
GM>>> written account of the install and the other processes.

GM>>> And, my employer has seen fit to change my work schedule,
GM>>> AGAIN, so this may take longer to fix! :-((

CA>> If it makes you feel any better, I have trashed my W2K
CA>> partition 15 times over the past 2 years or so while
CA>> changing configurations and tweaking or adding/removing
CA>> third party software. It happens and BootitNG has saved my
CA>> bacon all 15 times. :-)

GM> THAT is supposed to make me feel better? I gotta go change
GM> my socks. :)

I know that sounds horrific but this machine was never setup
properly to begin with and then children (small) had access to
it. It was rebooting every 45 minutes and was almost unuseable
when I got it. I had some major cleanup to do.

GM> It's too early for fly fishing and it's too cold for sky
GM> diving and the grand kids are much too young to appreciate
GM> these computers... I guess I'll have to fix the machine, as
GM> best I can, even if I don't have BING!
