While there are 3rd party utilities that can be used to transfer music (etc) on
- and off - iPods, Apple's iTunes is certainly the most widely-used software
for doing it. Unlike some other manufacturer's music players, iPods do not (by
default) appear as external drives for direct copying of files. (And while you
can set most iPods (in iTunes) for drive access, when you do that, the music
(etc) storage remains hidden).

And iTunes, by default, is set for a number of behaviours that a user may not
like - but many don't realize they can be changed. For instance, unless you pay
attention when first connecting an iPod, iTunes may erase everything on it,
replacing it with the contents of the iTunes music library. (You ARE given a
warning before this happens - but many people are in the habit of quickly
clicking OK without actually reading or thinking about what's on-screen).

And by default it stores music in a particular location, which may not be where
you want it to be stored, and by default uses the AAC format that is not
widely-supported.

All these things can be changes within iTunes - but a user has to take the time
to make the changes.
