PQ>Hi! Ed,
HI Paul,

PQ>On Sun, 22 Apr 12, you wrote to me:

PQ>These days with most PCs having great gobs of RAM we don't need to have huge
PQ>swap files/space. I use a 50/50 option if I have a choice in the matter.
PQ>Ubuntu went overboard creating a 9.3GB swap partition on this PC (back in
PQ>October 2010). After nearly 12 days of uptime since the last U'u update
PQ>requiring a reboot it has used only 65megs. At the time of creation I don't
PQ>remember having much of a choice.

Computers Always Win Because They Have Inside Information is all I can
say.

I haven't shrunk the swap file yet.
I just looked at C:\ and the swap file is 9 GB and the Hibernating file
is 3 GB.

PQ> EV> I increased the size of the Paging File because I read in a book that
PQ> EV> doing that would help keep Windows from Pausing at times.

PQ>The pausing is most probably due to some other reason. I recall that
Windows
PQ>3.xx used to do that for a local icon cache thing, and for a refresh of the
PQ>menus & desktop. Also, there used to be the occasional battle on the
network
PQ>as to which PC was to be the next 'browse maaster'.

I never noticed Windows 3.1 pausing on the 486DX2-66 box ever.

It had 16 MB RAM when I bought it and later I put another 16 MB in when
RAM prices went down.

Maybe I didn't notice any slowness because I thought that was normal for
a 486.

PQ> EV> Even after I increased the Paging File size, a few days later I was
PQ> EV> moving several files from one directory to another one and when I
PQ> EV> clicked on the Edit (Button?) in the Menu Bar of Windows Explorer,
PQ> EV> the word Edit stayed "Pressed Down" for a long time.

PQ>Eeek!

My feelings also.

PQ> EV> I've stopped using WallWatcher and Ethereal to monitor what the
PQ> EV> router/DSL modem is doing.
PQ> EV> I had no idea of how much extra stuff was going on while a home
PQ> EV> computer is connected to the internet.

PQ>Oh. yeah. There is a lot. The big surprise is the warfare going on, on
PQ>several fronts. The daily forays by Arab & Israeli hackers (against each
PQ>others' sites), or Chinese and/or Korean hackers (against everyone else)
make
PQ>for interesting reading whenever they make the news. After a while it all
PQ>becomes somewhat mundane, as you found out.

One of the IP addresses was from Spain unless that was spoofed.

PQ>Mmm... okay. For me, I can only just spell HAM. :)

Here in the USA the Morse Code requirement has been dropped.

If You're interested in getting a Ham Radio License check with the ACMA
to see if that requirement has been dropped there too.

PQ> EV> Thanks for Your help.

PQ>Anytime. Like the saying goes, 'at my age, everyone is entitled to my
PQ>opinion'. =:)

I'd say AMEN TO THAT! Thanks again.

I could follow along at what the Code was written to do, but I don't
know COBOL, just CBM BASIC and QBASIC.
