Ärende: Battery.
================
ML> EV> It has a Shuttle HOT 409 motherboard in it and the BIOS is an AMI
  > EV> Version 2.2 dated 11/11/1992.

ML>from what i see, J1 determines if you are using the internal or an external
  >battery... a jumper on pins 1&2 is for the internal battery... a jumper on
pi
  >2&3 is for an external battery...

ML>what pins are jumpered on J1? any? you don't mention a jumper on J1 so i can
  >only assume no pins are jumpered... this would indicate that one of the pins
  >a blank (no electrical connection) and so not having a jumper on it would be
  >the same as if it were jumpered...

Mark,

I haven't opened that box for a long time, but I will to check
the jumper setting out, and also to clean the fluff off the insides.

ML> EV> The BIOS Battery is about the shape of a C Cell but it has Wires
  > EV> attached to it that are soldered to the motherboard.

ML>i would call this an internal battery but this also depends on how it is
  >mounted... remember, i spoke of soldering a new battery in place by using a
k
  >with wires... did you by this board new and it came like this or??

It is the original board and battery when the box was built for
me.

I might do the Snip & Solder if I can't find a battery (or pack)
with a correctly wired jumper plug attached to it.

ML>the documentation i've seen shows a multi-cell battery soldered onto the
  >motherboard near the keyboard plug and where the power connector from the
pow
  >supply plug in... is this battery still in place or no?? it sounds like it
ha
  >already been removed and replaced with what you have now... is this where
you
  >battery is soldered to?

No, it is the original battery.

ML> EV> I found infomation for it on the internet.

ML> EV> J1 has 4 terminals one of them keyed, it is for the Battery.

ML> EV> I found information for it on the internet, I think mine is the 2.2
  > EV> version although I found another page without a version
  > EV> number but the J1 terminals is keyed on the other side

ML>somewhere on the motherboard is a version number silkscreened just like the
  >logo... you may not be able to see it very well if the cards are all plugged
  >in... generally on the edge by the slots furthest away from the power
supply.
  >there or in between the slots... sometimes they are on the back, too...

I'll look when I open the case up.

ML>none of the pictures i see of the motherboard are "real"... they're all
black
  >and while conversions or such... actually, i did find one but it was small
an
  >zooming in on it wasn't very helpful... but it did show a multi-cell in the
  >same place as described previously... the v1 of this board has a single flat
  >cell like the 2032 talked about before...

I saw the same illustrations as You did.
And I wish Shuttle stayed with the flat cell the v1 board had
instead of soldering a cell to the board, I would had placed a
new battery on the board a long time ago just to keep the RTC
running.

ML> EV> Any idea of which terminal is Plus and Minus and what Voltage does
  > EV> it want an External Battery to be?

ML>this J1 appears to be only a jumper block to select one or the other of
  >internal (mounted on the MB) or external (connected to another pin block)...
  >i've not seen anything indicating what other pin block would be used for an
  >external battery, though...

I didn't see another pin block either, I thought a replacement
battery for it would come with a plug that goes in J1, just as my
friends Gateway 2000 386 had a AA battery case with a plug on it to
put on the board when his original battery failed.

I did that job for him around 1991-1993, before I got the 486,
so I would think that the boards would be using the same method.

Of course my VESA board was NEWER TECHNOLOGY than the 386 board
in his GW2000. ??? <GRIN>

ML> EV> I looked at onlybatteries.com but didn't see anything on the page
  > EV> to locate a BIOS battery so I could learn the voltage it needs.

ML>yeah, you likely won't find it on a battery site... it is a very old board,
  >really... i don't think i have one laying around here, either... we used to
  >sell the shuttle boards way back... in fact, all the MBs i have here have
all
  >have the batteries cut off of them to try to protect the MB from battery
  >leakage... i did that when i discovered one or two that were being damaged
by
  >leaking batteries... so i removed all of them, inspected, cleaned and
repaire
  >those i could... those i could not were trashed after salvaging everything
el
  >off of them that i could...

I suppose I ought to cut the battery leads and remove the battery
since it doesn't work anyway. Thanks for the hint.
