=====================
Hi Hap,

 hn> Happy Holidays Ruth!

And Mele Kalikimaka back to you. (G)

-> Good! Give her a new (easy) one every couple of weeks or so; by the
-> time she finishes her work there, she will be an accomplished cook as
-> well. Save the ones that are a bit more "fiddly" for times she comes
-> home and can cook with you.

 hn> When we went down to visit this past summer, I
 hn> took a little cookbook that I found (the BIG
 hn> Little Book of easy recipes) and made it a "gift"
 hn> for the grad student housing kitchen...it has been
 hn> very well received, and several of the grad
 hn> students have mentioned that they've
 hn> made dishes from it that have become

Sounds like you found a winner there. I've given friends basic recipies
from time to time but not yet donated a cook book to a student group
like that. If it gets them thinking of meals other than take out, fast
food, ramen or mac & cheese out of a box, it will be well worth the
money spent.

 hn> "favorites"! Amanda has been using it
 hn> as well and she's expanding her

Good for her! Deborah admits that she resorts to the microwave probably
more often than she should for "no brainer" meals.

 hn> menu list (grin) she loves making bread
 hn> from scratch and has been doing
 hn> a lot of that lately!

Sounds good to me. NIce thing about that is that there's about 20
minutes of work needed at first, then let it sit & rise for about an
hour, then about 10 minutes to shape. Let it sit for another hour or
so, turn the oven on and bake for 40 minutes. Another maybe 10 minutes
to pull it out & turn it onto cooling racks, then later, put away. Very
little work time overall but great tasting results.

->  HN> Amanda and I love seafood, so it's been a
-> HN> nice bond for us, we go out together for
-> HN> some seafood, just the two of us....a great
->  HN> experience for a dad!

-> I'm not sure about Rachel but Steve, Deborah and I like it. Just means
-> Steve can't get away with just taking Deborah with him for seafood. (G)

 hn> Poor guy! He just has to figure out another
 hn> way to get good Daddy-daughter time!

She trailed him back to work after lunch--hitting the road to Atlanta
this afternoon for her flight back to AZ this evening.

-> HN> I'm not the biggest fan of mincemeat
->  HN> but I don't have a huge sweet tooth
-> HN> to start with. For the holidays we

-> Sounds good to me. I wasn't "into" mincemeat before meeting Steve. I
-> guess it's not one of my dad's favorite foods so it wasn't in our house
-> own (as I have, from her recipe) and used it for a cookie filling, pie
-> and other uses. The cookie recipe she gave me turned out way too soft
-> purpose. I ended up mixing the mincemeat into the dough and making drop
-> cookies. Steve took a plateful into work and they were well recieved.

 hn> "Cookies from Home" are ALWAYS well received in the military! Even
 hn> if home is only a few minutes away!

Any goodies are! I'm trying to send some in about once a month since
the unit is so good about letting Steve off for my medical needs. They
get snapped up quickly.

-> Don't see why it wouldn't work. My mom used to make about 8 different
-> kinds of cookies. She still makes several--more than she should since

 hn> We usually limit ourselves to a couple of
 hn> very specific cookies that we enjoy making
 hn> and enjoy sharing. I have the ingredients for

I used to make about half a dozen differnet kinds when the girls were
home. Then in HI we dropped to mostly pizzelas & last year we didn't do
any. This year I HAD to make something before we left. Of course once
we get to Las Vegas, Robert will be helping Grandma make some cut outs.
(G)

-> -> hangers in a closet. (G) Seriously, it comes from living for years in
-> -> places where all sorts of not so nice bugs love food left out and dirty

-> HN> Yup I usually do the same, but sometimes
-> HN> it's nice to just sit and relax after
-> HN> dinner and do the dishes in the morning!

-> I'd still rather get them done the night before. Had to be out early
-> for a visit to the orthopedic doctor. The foot is still giving me
-> trouble but he can't do anything more. It's just a "have to live with"
-> thing now.

 hn> Most of the time I do them pretty much as I cook and
 hn> right after we eat. But laziness is a gift I sometimes
 hn> give myself when it comes to kitchen work! (grin)
 hn> Not as often as I'd like, but sometimes anyway!

Sometimes I'll do them on commercial breaks during Jeoparday and Good
Eats (7:30-8:30). Most are done as I go along and the dishwasher is
loaded as I go/we finish eating so there aren't too many. I'll give the
kitchen one last go thru before going to bed and start the dishwasher
then.

Catch you later,
Ruth
