Ärende: summer gardens in ny [1]
====================================================================
Hi Ruth!

>> crop last > year, don't know about this year, thanks to late cold
>> snaps.
>> I have a feeling it will be a similar story for NY Apples this fall.
> My folks say their trees are loaded--same with the bosc pear and the
> cherry tree was.

Our crabapple trees did fine :)

>> Hmm.. did you tell the people at the place you're staying at that you
>> have Asthma? Just wondering if they'll have an air-conditioner in
>> there .... so you can sleep..

> No, we'd not mentioned it. If there's a fan, I should be able to handle
> it--I hope.

I can't imagine them not having a fan at least, that's for sure..

>> It was pretty well known in the area I grew up in.. we were using
>> carob powder we'd get at specialty shops in Warwick (shops for herbs,
>> spices, etc.). It was really popular back then because it was so sweet
>> compared to coco... and there were a lot of people who were allergic
>> to chocolate in our crowd.

> Interesting that there was a cluster of chcocolate specific allergies.

I don't think it wasn't a cluster as in the scientific/medical sense of the
word.. just a lot of kids with common food allergies. And some of them might
have just not liked what chocolate was doing to their complexions (bg). It was
very popular to sue carob then.

>> Yes, indeed. My doc. in Manhatten told me that most people with MS
>> have it like I do, so that's also a good thing to hear.

> So you are in good company, numbers wise at least. (G)

True :) Since he's in NYC, I expect he's seen quite all of the types of MS.
Some people have it very rough when they first get it, just like I did.. MS has
plateaus that you have to get past timewise (in years) to establish the type
you have, for the most part.

>> I didn't count on them helping much to be honest.. don't forget they
>> were so small. No, I knew I just had to deal with this and make it
>> work .. for everyone in our family. So I found other things to do with

> I didn't really have a lot of trouble (at least it wasn't diagnosed)
> until I was in my 30s. Sometimes I wish it had been discovered earlier,
> other times, I'm glad it wasn't.

Well, allegies and such change a lot after you have children, and as you get
older they'll change again.. so perhaps it wouldn't have shown then.

>> myself and my sparetime, instead of acting as I mentioned to Burt
>> here.. That's when I taught myself to program. That's also when I got
>> into gardening and cooking (and we were also pretty broke then (vbg)).

> I know the broke feeling; I've learned to be pretty "creative" in

Know what you mean there (grin).

> cooking over the years. Some things have stayed with us like the Monday
> Night Surprise. (G)

Heh :) My cooking has changed no doubt because I've tried so many different
types of cooking.. like sushi, chinese food, etc., though I still make a lot
of Italian dishes of course.

>> > So how much did you bring home? (G)

>> We brought home what we thought was a ton.. Ron and I finished it for
>> lunch the next day though, so maybe it wasn't as much as we'd
>> thought.. :)

> Or you were hungry-er than you thought.

Could be :) It was great food though. We went back there day before yesterday
and they recognized us. This time I ordered Beef Short Ribs in Sweet and Sour
sauce, and Ron ordered Three-flavor Chicken. Both were exceptional. We also
ordered the Tofu and Tomato soup again :) The soup was fantastic once again.
They asked us if we'd prefer white rice or brown as a side, and we both
selected brown rice. It was good :)

> Well, you've seen how helpful we are here..................

Yes, I have :) I'm hoping the second try at beets will take.. it was over 90F
here today. Also, what's funny is I have this one bed that had a few green
bell pepper seeds planted.. they've come up, but I'm wondering if those plants
that I see there are skunk cabbage Lol - should know pretty soon .. Yes, even
the weeds look so healthy in my garden since I use such a good mix of
dirt/peatmoss Lol. I could probably see the Dandelion greens if I wanted to :)
I know one health-food store that sells them :)

>> The Balsamic vinegar is the one you'd do best using if you weren't
>> going to use wine. You could use red wine vinegar instead of course -
>> depends on your taste. I find balsamic is much milder.

> It would depend on what mood I'm in, where the moon is, etc--I've both
> on the shelf. I could try both & see what we liked better.

Good idea ;)

Take care,
Janis
