=====================
Hi Nancy,

NB> dumped out NB>> into piles, the fruit added, and then the stuffed
NB> stocking could be NB>> put back into the bag (with the person's name
 NB> on it)...

RH> Madness to your method. (G)

 NB> Yup. ;)

Sometimes organisation is a good thing. (G)

 NB> Linus project
NB> NB>> I'm sure it was a lot of fun... and that there was
NB> conversational buzz NB>> as well, filling the room. This is an
 NB> on-going project, I gather?

RH> Yes, it's a nation wide one as well. A group meets every 3-4 months
RH> here in the Savannah area; I think there are 2 groups in the area.
RH> Kids in crisis situations get a small quilt or blanket (they can be

 NB> Indeed a worthy cause. :)

And one that I enjoy as it means playing with fabric. (G)

RH> Talked to Rachel; Challenger does not do field trips as they detract
RH> from academic time. Parents are supposed to supply enrichment
 RH> experiences.

NB> Still seems a bit short-sighted to me... but I suppose that one would
NB> hope that parents that would chose such a school for their kids would
NB> also be more likely to stay involved in the whole process...??

I should hope so. Still, tho, the kids don't get the experience of
going to places with the class. There's just something about a group of
kids scattering across a field of pumpkins..............

NB> softball. I think she RH>> was the only one with a small pumpkin. We
NB> bought a bigger one (Jack O RH>> Lantern size) at the school's
NB> Pumkpin Patch Carnival about a week later.

NB> NB>> Sounds like she was the only sensible one... :) And she got two
NB> NB>> pumpkins out of it, one to share, and one for her very own...

RH> Both had faces drawn on them (with marker) for jack o lanterns; then
RH> cooked down for pies, etc afterward.

 NB> A totally win situation... :)

Yes, we started doing it fairly early on. Steve likes most anything
made with pumpkin so this way we got a joack o lantern and fresh pumpkin
afterward. The first year we were married, we did do a carved jack o
lantern. Put it out, looked out a bit later and somebody had stolen it.

NB> NB>> produce better educated kids... when the so-called frills (like
 NB> the NB>> arts, music,

RH> Challenger does have some sort of art and music program. Since it's a
RH> private school, they don't have to teach to the test. The students
RH> there work at a grade or two higher than public schools.

NB> I'm glad they at least have art and music as part of their curriculum.
NB> I went to a small parent-run Christian school for much of my
NB> schooling... the 7-12 portion of it set aside one day a week for the
NB> enrichment parts of education, various art and music classes, drama,
NB> choir, even sewing, and others that I don't remember now, and also gym
NB> classes... we had to use the Y facilities and a public playing field,
NB> as the school didn't have their own. And academically we tended to be
 NB> at
NB> at least a grade or nore higher than the public schools.

Sounds like it was a really good school. Some of the home schoolers
here are in a co-op; they meet together for some of the high school
classes (like sciences) and enrichment type for younger kids. The older
kids also have clubs to explore specific interests. It's mostly
Christian families in the group; they meet at one of the larger churches
that has a school attached.

NB> NB>> home ec, field trips, etc) are really quite important to making
NB> the NB>> learning stick, and become more than just meaningless facts
NB> to forget NB>> as soon as the test is done...

RH> Sad to say, a lot of it is true. But, the basic education level of
RH> kids graduating high school needs to be increased as well.

NB> Very true... one can't just do enrichment without teaching, or
NB> there's nothing to enrich... ;> But there needs to be real teaching
NB> happening for there to be real learning... and real teaching includes
NB> whatever it takes to help the child assimilate the knowledge... along
NB> with the child needing to be engaged in the process.

Yes, kids have to be well rounded in their education. Good teachers can
help all kinds of learners (visual, aural, tactile, etc) learn and enjoy
it at the same time.  That's where I think field trips help as well;
some kids learn better by actually seeing or participating.
