Ärende: good eats!
==================
Hi Bob,

BG> NC is nice, not Hawaii but nice.

 RH> The cost of living is better here tho.  We've moved further inland;
RH> when we were in Savannah, we were about half an hour from the beach.
RH> Here we're about 3-4 (depending on which beach you want) hours away. No

BG> I've spent a few weeks in the Raleigh-Durham area.
BG> Nortell had a school. It was warmer and muggier than I like,
BG> but many people love that kind of weather. Beaches are nice,

I don't like it so warm & muggy but that's what we have to deal with for
a few years. Hopefully we'll be heading out west when Steve is done
with seminary.

BG> we have several close on the Great Lakes, but the kids don't
BG> want to go there and get sand in their shorts, they want to go
BG> to the Giant Wave pool ... Dunno about these modern kids.

I know, just have to wonder about them sometimes. (G)

BG> me on of those hanging basket things and an upside down tomato

BG> I picked the first one this morning. It was not quite as rip as
BG> I wanted but I'm not taking any chances on the birds beating me
BG> to it. That area where you are is fantastic for fresh veggies.
BG> I'm happy to have a tomato by August, but now I'm eating fresh
BG> corn trucked up from your backyard. What a wonderful place for
BG> a person who loves good food to live.

We're enjoying the local farmer's markets, especially the one right here
in Wake Forest. We got some more tomatoes, some purple bells and some
lamb yesterday.

Upside down planter
BG> They take a lot more care than they show on the commercials.
BG> Because the earth is open at the bottom, all the water drains
BG> through quickly, so they need watering daily, even in a rain.

Our tomato plants have taken right off. Yes, we are adding a lot of
water but that's not an issue. We're trying to collect rain water as
much as we can to use for that.

BG> I did parsley once, that stuff took over the yard. Watch out
BG> it grows faster than grass.

RH> Ours is confined to a 6" pot; the first seedlings are just beginning
RH> to poke thru now. I'll keep it as an indoor plant, harvesting as needs
 RH> be.

BG> I tried this scheme I saw in a magazine about laying out little
BG> plots and planting herbs in their own plot. HA.. roots run out
BG> under the separators, they seed in the breeze. I have some thyme
BG> planted in between the bricks on the patio, but winter takes it
BG> out, then the seeds seed all over the place next spring.

If you want, you will have an herb garden instead of a yard. Saves
having to mow. (G)

BG> The more I learn about inverted plants, the less enthusiastic
BG> I am about them. Mine are doing OK, but I baby the heck out
BG> of them. The neighbors who put theirs in much earlier have not
BG> bunches of neat hanging leaves with bright red tomatoes, but
BG> more like long stalks of thick tomato bush hanging down with
BG> wilted leaves and a very few tiny fruits.

We've got a few beginings of blossoms now. Stay tuned.......

RH> It's really not a lot of work to dry herbs. We're going basically
RH> organic with the way we're raising them. Not knowing how the
RH> prepackaged dry ones were raised (unless they specify organic) is good
RH> reason to grow our own.

BG> nice to have fresh all season though.

Yes, that's why we're doing some indoors.

BG> It doesn't get that cold down where you are, you might have a
BG> herb garden year round in a box covered in the winter with
 BG> clear plastic.

Possibly, but I wouldn't mind if some of the rosemary died out a bit.
Same with some of the other plants. (G)

RH> Definately! Steve used some of the basil the other day in a
RH> deconstructed BLT. He had the B & L on the side of a T and basil
 RH> sandwich.

 BG> Love samiches with herbs.

I use them more in cooking.

BG> ... OK, so what's the speed of dark?

The opposite of the speed of light, obviously.

Catch you later,
Ruth
