Hi Ruth!

>> Glad to hear about the excellent report :)

> Same here; I was a bit worried as I'd had some trouble about 10 years

Great :)

>> > Dr. said with the family history, it shold be done

>> he > saidhis dr. wants it every 3 years (ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

>> Better to be careful I would think.

> Yes, I know. I suspect I'm the only one of my siblings that has medical

Know what you mean there.. though I've been lucky really I think. Besides
Sinus trouble/Allegies to dogs/cats/dust/mold (everything in my house Lol), I'm
pretty healthy.. well, except that drug that I just went off really did a
number on me.. I lost a lot of weight that I didn't have to lose to start with
:(, and my blood pressure was down to 97/60.. no wonder I was so darn dizzy :(
Now I'm starting to get my appetite back at least so that's something.. Here's
a nice fattening bread I made to help me get healthy again :)

===Panetone===
We like baking this in coffee tins, decorated as gift boxes :)

Panetone
5 cups sifted flour
1 package compressed fresh yeast, or 2 envelopes dry yeast 2 teaspoons salt
3 whole eggs
2/3 cup sugar
2/3 cup butter at room temperature
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup chopped candied citron
1 tablespoon confectioners sugar
4 sugar cubes, crushed

Put 3/4 cup of the flour in a bowl and make a well in the center of the flour.
In a separate small bowl, mix 1/4 cup lukewarm water with the compressed yeast
mix 1/3 cup lukewarm water with the dry yeast. Pour the yeast and water into
the well of the flour. Mix the flour in to make a soft dough. Knead the flour
into a ball, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk to make a
sponge. Dissolve half the sugar in 2 tablespoons lukewarm water. Mix the rest
of the flour with the salt, the sugar/water mixture, the 3 whole eggs and half
of the softened butter and then add the sponge. Knead the dough until it cleans
the sides of the bowl. Roll out the dough smoothly and sprinkle it with
remaining soft butter and two of the egg yolks. Top the dough with the raisins
and citron. Knead the dough again for 15 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.
Roll the dough into a ball and put it on a buttered and floured bowl. Let the
dough rise in a warm place until doubled. Form the Panetone into a round loaf
and place on a buttered and floured baking sheet. Beat together two egg yolks,
one tablespoon of water and the confectioners sugar. Spead the mixture on top
of the Panetone. Score the top of the Panetone with a knife and sprinkle it
with the crushed sugar cubes. Bake at 350o for 50 minutes

>> try to solve the problem with a liquid diet rather than surgery (best

> Better a liquid diet than an IV one.

Yes, for sure..

>> when all of us thought the worst given the info we were getting
>> (really aggravating..) Well, things are looking up now thank goodness.

> Last spring/sumer my dad had a series of medical problems so I know what
> you're going thru. It's hard to be so far away; you want to be there

Yes, indeed.

>> By the time I got to Cornell/Med. Center NYHosp. I was quite a mess. I
>> call that a sucessful visit if I can off a nasty drug (bg).

> That is good to hear. I wish I could get off my pharmacy but.....one of
> these days I will.........forever.

Hopefully off them while you can still enjoy your time off them!

>> I used a different cork last summer, but I don't remember doing that.

> Aha! I don't remember anything about a cork or stopper. Could be there
> was one but if so, she probably lost it.

Could be.. it's so small it's not the kind of thing you probably would have
noticed..

>> I don't freeze it in the container I make it in because it would be
>> awkward.. the cylander for the wooden bucket is very very long, and
>> the other ice cream maker probably container really can't be sealed.

> Our canister has a separate plastic lid but it doesn't look like it
> would seal very well.

If it's like mine, yes, that's what I mean about not really being able to seal
it.. that lid is on it, but it's barely a seal :)

> Besides, if we put the ice cream into something
> else, we can make another batch faster. (G)

hahaha true :)

> Steve was looking for the
> bowl for the finished ice cream last week--thought I'd not gotten one
> out. I showed him that yes, it was right by the recipe.

:)

>> Pretty cool :)

> But he couldn't handle simple home repairs; my mom said that her
> grandfather (who lived nearby) knew to bring his tool box whenever he
> was invited for dinner.

My dad was always like that.. he always hired men to do work that needed to be
done... So unlike Ron. Ron isn't afraid to tackle any job, pretty much.

> But, there are some that think that the hotter it is, the better it
> tastes. Bleurgh!

Well, I like thai and korean food when it's hot, but flavorful :) A dish with
just tons of red pepper flakes doesn't do it for me (g)

>> I purchase some chinese cabbage :) :) My cukes are coming up though..
>> so that something.. aggraving year for the garden, but there's still
>> quite a bit of summer to go yet..

> Dad hasn't given up either but he is somewhat frustrated by the crazy
> weather and the fact he can't do as much as he feels he can do.

Well my lettuce was so great this year.. It actually had heads on it.. tasted
incredibly good too :) The peas are about ready for a re-planting, and have
generated tons of sugar snaps :) The potatoes look like they're going crazy
too.. my Daikon radish looks skimpy, but we've had a lot of rain the last few
days so I'm hoping that will help :)

Take care,
Janis
