$cumca$t does stand-alone cable internet service. I just got a flyer from the
local gang of thieves offering U$26/mo + U$10/mo modem fee. Of course you can
buy a modem for around U$35 to 40. But, few bother. I own one as I took a brief
flyer with cable internet service ... and found that for throughput on the
stuff that I download/stream my DSL from Maw Bell (AT&T) is faster overall.
Seems that $cumca$t "throttles" the throughput on content that competes with
what they offer on their pay tee-vee channels - which also means that they are
monitoring my internet usage. And that just bites the bitter carrot. So,
forkem.

As for the satellite internet - you may have heard some horror stories. But, I
sold and installed a number of hook-ups. If the dish is aimed properly and is
stable the signal should be reliable and usable during anything short of a
category three hurricane. The main problem is with the cloud cover as the
moisture in the atmosphere tends to absorb energy in the wavelengths used in
satellite communication. To combat this Galil (G-Tech) uses very high power
satellite transmitters which can burn through a lot of cloud cover. Yeah,
they're the same folks who got their start providing arms to the Israeli army -
and have evolved into high tech electronic, satellite and medical fields. And
sometimes, like if you live out in the boonies, too far from a central phone
office for DSL and out where the Cable TV providers don't go - satellite is the
only hope for broadband.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Boondock Stew
Categories: Beef, Stews, Wine, Beer, Vegetables
      Yield: 5 servings

    1/4 c Olive oil
  1 1/4 lb Well-marbled chuck; in 1"
           - pieces (NOT extra-lean)
      6 lg Garlic cloves; minced
6 c Beef stock or canned broth
      1 c Guinness
      1 c Fine red wine
      2 tb Tomato paste
      1 tb Sugar
      1 tb Dried thyme
      1 tb Worcestershire sauce
      2 Bay leaves
      2 tb Butter
3 lb Russet potatoes; peeled, in
           - 1/2" pieces (7 cups)
      1 lg Onion; chopped
      2 c (1/2") pcs peeled carrots
           Salt & Pepper
      2 tb Chopped fresh parsley

Heat olive oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat.
Lightly salt the beef pieces. Working in batches if
necessary, add the beef (do not crowd the pan, or the meat
will steam and not brown) and cook, without stirring, until
nicely browned on one side, then use tongs to turn the
pieces over. Continue to cook in this manner until all sides
are browned, about 5 minutes. Add garlic and sauti 1 minute.
Add beef stock, Guinness, red wine, tomato paste, sugar,
thyme, Worcestershire sauce and bay leaves. Stir to combine.
Bring mixture to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, then cover
and simmer 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

While the meat and stock is simmering, melt butter in
another large pot over medium heat. Add potatoes, onion and
carrots. Sauti vegetables until golden, about 20 minutes.
Set aside until the beef stew in step one has simmered for
  one hour.

Add vegetables to beef stew. Simmer uncovered until
vegetables and beef are very tender, about 40 minutes.
Discard bay leaves. Tilt pan and spoon off fat. Transfer
stew to serving bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle
with parsley and serve. (Can be prepared up to 2 days ahead.
Cool slightly. Refrigerate uncovered until cold, then cover
and refrigerate. Bring to simmer before serving.)

  Serves 4 to 6.
