Ärende: Cycling Games

 DD> I don't know. But, I'll bet he doesn't wear pedal pushers.

GJ> But he does or did push pedals. Is he still a "hero" in USA? To
GJ> revert slightly to an earlier subject, as there are computer games
GJ> based on racing cars with famous drivers, I wondered if there were
 GJ> games commemorating famous cyclists.

I know there is a Jesse Johnson game or three ... but, he's not a cyclist in
the context of Lance Armstrong - he's a BMX racer and stunt rider. Lance
Armstrong is featured in almost all the the Bicycle Team Manager games released
during the period(s) he was competing. There is also a Lance Armstrong game
available on the Nike web site.

GJ> And when the turbines don't turn, the cost is infinite. The 50 W
GJ> Bangladeshi solar lighting installations include the battery.

DD> Which is why such - and solar, and geothermal, etc. are hooked into a
DD> grid. DUH!!! There is a wind power installation which I pass by several
DD> times per week. Probably 50 or more (I've never counted them) TALL
DD> windmills. I have seldom seen them still ... although it has happened
 DD> from time to time.

GJ> It is generally accepted that wind power cannot exceed about 20% of
GJ> the capacity of an electrical network, due to its intermittency.

You are quibbling and caviling (izzat a word?) attempting misdirection, in any
event. I covered intermittency above.

DD> So, what happens in Bangladesh in the middle of monsoon with no sun
DD> for extended periods and the battery goes flat? The big "wind farm"
DD> installations are hooked into a grid. A solar powered battery with no
DD> solar is about as useful as an oil lamp with no fuel.

GJ> Although the sun may disappear for extended periods in some benighted
GJ> parts of your continent, in countries closer to the equator it rises
GJ> every morning, without fail. During monsoon seasons there is still
GJ> light, which although not as bright as during the dry seasons, it is
GJ> still sufficient to charge batteries. Perhaps you are confusing solar
GJ> electric cells with solar water heaters, which are more affected by
 GJ> clouds and overcast.

No, I'm not.

GJ> The fixed costs of capital expenditure can vary a lot, depending on
GJ> who is calculating them, and his side in the debate. There is also
GJ> the cost of maintaining back-up generating capacity for turbines for
GJ> when the wind stops blowing.

See the definition of "electric grid".

DD> That's why they are hooked into an electric grid. Even an engineer
DD> ought to be able to come to grips with that concept.

GJ> Of course, which is why wind turbines cannot replace fossil fuel
GJ> generators, but merely supplement them. The larger the grid, the
GJ> better, which is why there are plans for a huge one, covering most of
GJ> Europe and northern Africa, incorporating coal, geo-thermal, nuclear,
GJ> hydro, wind and solar sources of power. The Sahara is very big on
 GJ> solar capacity.

Spain/Portugal/France have some big solar reflectors heating sodium which then
powers electric generating turbines. Quite impressive -- and as the sodium
retains its heat fairly well the generators work well after sundown. As well,
the Frogs are working with tidal generators which use the tidal currents (both
up and down) to generate EMF.

DD> Actual production cost for nuclear generated power run about $0.017
DD> per kW/h. However, startup, inspection, regulatory, etc. costs and
DD> costs of perpetual storage of spent fuel run the actual cost out of the
DD> realm of credulity. (various web-sites including the NRDC)

GJ> There is also the high cost of dismantling nukes at the end of their
GJ> lives, yet some countries are still building more nuke stations.

DD> See above - that's covered under perpetual storage.

GJ> You did specify "spent fuel", and not the radio-active components of
GJ> the reactors. Australia has some ideal locations for perpetual
GJ> storage, far from any habitations, where the spent fuel could reside
GJ> in peace until economical methods of re-processing can be devised, or
GJ> humanity destroys itself, whichever comes first.

I am not sanguine as to the prospects of the continued survival of the human
species, long term.

DD> Hardly. But, then again you have never let reason or truth stand in
DD> the way of one of your misconceptions.

 GJ> "What is truth?"

Beats the hell out of me Mr. Pilate
