The dishwasher has not worked since the house came into the
family decades ago. It is of course of a nonstandard size.
I told Jonathan once that I would not authorize a disbursement
from the estate to have a replacement made, but he was free to
use money from his share of the estate (6 figures, as he gets
more than I do, because of the clause written in at my suggestion
to protect him when he was a minor child) to do so. Anyhow, he
would likely not use it except perhaps as a storage spot for who
knows what dirty articles.

He has been taught to do this, but nothing is going to correct
his habit of leaving stuff around - not just in the sink - I
often find dishes with crusted and/or rotting food at his place
at the table, at my place at the table, on top of the microwave,
and so on.

Aside from the mental health stuff, which changes periodically,
everything he's taking is from the standard regimen. One thing
about the kid is that though most of his behaviors are in some
way self-destructive, he is more terrified of death than anyone
else I know.

The network nightlies are supposed to correct for that bias, but
judging from what I saw (in the online editions - I don't watch
TV much) they did not do so in this case until many days into the
crisis.

I recommend it, of course.

Here's something that looks pretty good and pretty easy. If your
dietary thing prevents you from using sherry vinegar, balsamic
might be a good substitute, in which case depending on the
vinegar, you might want to cut the sugar to half or less. I find
the amount of garlic and mint a little high, as well.

Tomato mint soup
cat: soup, vegan, easy
Serves: 4 to 6

10 tomatoes
15 garlic cloves
5 shallots
5 sprigs fresh thyme
1 oz olive oil
1/2 c aged sherry vinegar
1/4 lb fresh mint leaves
2 c tomato juice
1 oz brown sugar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Cut the tomatoes in quarters. Roughly chop the garlic
and shallots. Toss tomatoes, garlic, and shallots in a
bowl with the thyme leaves, olive oil, and vinegar.
Spread the vegetables on a sheet pan and roast at
375F until the tomatoes have some charred color. Watch
the garlic to make sure it does not burn.

Put all of the ingredients (reserving a small bunch of
mint for garnish) into a stainless steel pot with
straight, high sides. Bring to a low simmer and cook
for 20 min. You may want to give the soup a pulse with
an immersion blender depending on how smooth or chunky
you like it. Season with salt and pepper. Add more brown
sugar or vinegar, to taste.

Presentation: Ladle the soup into a bowl. Tear the
remaining mint leaves and sprinkle on top to garnish.
