====================================================================
Hi John,

-> JG> What I remember about folks saying went on at the American Legion
-> JG> hall and the Knights of Columbous hall was that generally the only
-> JG> thing the building seemed to be used for was bickering and drinking
-> JG> beer! An employee at the store I worked at used to stock up on lots

-> Our local American Legion post is a dry one, no bar in it. I don't know
-> if there's a local KofC or not.

JG> In Louisiana, a dry American Legion would be one without any
JG> members! One reason I was glad to leave Louisiana.... Folks just

Ours is probably dry because of the seminary and college here in town. I
suspect the post was started by students of one or the other.

 JG> didn't know
JG> there was a way of living and breating without being intoxicated!
JG> When my dad was alive, there was a guy that worked for the phone
JG> company, who had to stop at the union hall to grab a beer on lunch
 JG> break, and in
JG> between service calls... Picture if you will, a full size
JG> refrigirator that is chocked full of beer, except a samll section on
JG> the very bottom for Dr Pepper! Must have been interesting taking
 JG> notes at the meetings!

IF anything was worth taking notes on. Must have been some interesting
reading of the notes too. (G)

-> I'm just as happy ours is a dry post. There's probably enough fussing
-> going on without anything extra fueling it.

JG> I definitely could understand that... Amazing some of the problems
JG> Louisiana has.... One day, they're going to run out of folks stupid
JG> enough to stay there, or they'll realize their relaxed policy of
JG> alcohol will end up killing off their population! I can remember

We were in NOLA a couple of years ago for the Southern Baptist
Convention Annual Meeting. Interesting, the bits of the city we saw,
people we talked to.

 JG> several
JG> stories in the papers of folks with charges of 5 first offense DUI's.
JG> A lady who killed a baby on Christmas Day was released from jail w/o
JG> any of the usual requirements like a breath tube for her car,
 JG> high-risk
JG> insurance, etc. because she promised the judge she'd be a good little
JG> girl from now on! Even thought that was or her 2nd or 3rd DUI
JG> offense... She promised she wouldn't get in trouble again! Another
JG> lady come in the store where I worked at. She was telling this
 JG> younger guy
JG> how she talked to the DA, and gave him some money, and he dropped all
JG> the charges against her. She just has to pay the DA some money every
JG> so many months, and not worry about attending any alcohol classes,
JG> breathing devices in her car, nothing against her insurance... Gosh,
 JG> that DA's so nice!

I'll bite my tongue so as not to make a comment on that.

-> -> IIRC, my mom's made a square loaf. Our first couple of machines made a
-> -> tall rectangular loaf, the latest one has a horizontal rectangular pan
-> -> with 2 paddles. We use the KA mixer and do 2 loaves at a time more often
-> -> now.
-> JG> I can see myself making some interesting bread loaves... But not
-> JG> enough to justify buying a bread maker.... And I'm not a baker,

-> We like real whole wheat bread. I'd baked our own, sometimes 8 loaves at
-> a time, until I broke both wrists. That made it hard to knead so we got
-> the first bread machine. It died while we still had one daughter at home
-> so we got another. When it died, we replaced it, then Steve got me the
-> Kitchen Aid. He said he likes the bread recipe I use (the one we used to
-> use, before breaking the wrists) better.

JG> My wife reminded me, I gotta see what the doc's claim against whole
JG> wheat bread is... They used to say its good for you, but now they're
JG> saying avoid it... Lots of things they tell you is good to eat, give
JG> them a couple of years and they'll say its bad and tell you to eat the
JG> things that they told you not to eat 2 years ago... And they wonder
JG> why some folks say I don't care if it's not good for me, I'm going to
 JG> just
JG> enjoy being alive while I can!

We like the taste a lot better than the white flour. It's also not
chemically bleached, preservatives added, etc.

-> Ever have Italian pepperoni bread? I had some, while visiting my in laws
-> in Florida a few years ago. It also has mozzarella cheese in it--good
-> stuff! One of these days I'll make a whole wheat version.

JG> Maybe.... My mom used to buy something with Peperoni and cheeze in
 JG> it...

Sounds like it might be similar.

-> All kinds of things you can do with bread! One recipe in my original
-> bread machine book called for an envelop of dried onion soup. That made
-> a good bread! I might pull it out and adapt it to the new machine.

JG> Uh oh, that'll sell one to my wife! Everything she cooks she puts
JG> onion soup mix and Whistershire saunce or Terioki sauce in it....
 JG> Piggly
JG> Wiggly sells onion soup mix in individual packs 3/$1.00. She goes and
 JG> buys 12-25 packs at a time....

She's getting a sodium overload there. I'll try to remember to pull out
the book and post the recipe, then try adapting it for my current
machine.
