Hi Dave,

Proves the old adage: you can't judge a book by its cover. We don't have
any of those issues with the place we are going to buy. It has some
other ones though, which are currently being addressed by the seller
with some minor ones postponed until I can take care of them after we
take posession.

We will have about 20 years on the roof, which was a 25 year shingle
roof installed in 2009. I will look very hard at metal roofing when it
comes time to replace this one. I understand doing some things myself. I
did some wiring that way, taking a guide to code and following it. I did
not have an electrician check it, but it worked and if the house is
still standing, probably still works. Plumbing is a different matter. I
would want someone who knows plumbing to check that for sure. Of course,
now I would probably need permits and inspections to do anything,
probably to include hiring a "professional" to do the work. There are
times I can do better work myself though.

 DD> The search continues.

 NB> Hopefully you'll find a keeper pretty soon... :)

DD> Got another, in a somewhat better neighbourhood, a bit bigger. It has
DD> a recent roof. But, the Realtor blurb says "renters were not kind to
DD> this property". Cosmetics I can handle. Paint is (relatively)
DD> inexpensive. And no basement to worry about - it's on a slab. Phil is
DD> going to do a walk-around on it today whilst I am at work. We'll see
 DD> what eventuates.

One of the places we looked at was a rental. It would have needed
significant work. It had a rather large deck that was in poor shape. It
did have a garage, but the interior layout was not what Ruth wanted. It
also would have needed significant work on the siding as it was
water-damaged masonite siding.

As for paint, it sure is not as inexpensive as it used to be. I just
paid $24.27 plus tax (with 10% military discount, $26.97 undiscounted)
for a gallon of white exterior semi-gloss paint/primer. It was for a
hand rail for the new place (needed to pass VA Appraisal inspection)
which the seller did not want to install since there was not one when he
purchased the house. At least the house trim is white, so I can use it
for touch-up when we get the place.

I hope the walk-around goes well. I hope you find a house to your
liking.

I saw the title and though of you. I have not made this yet, but intend
to do so once we get moved.

Categories: American, Breads
     Yield: 1 Batch

          1 pk of yeast in
      1 1/4 c of warm water
          2 t sugar
          1 t salt
          2 tb of oil
3 1/2-3 3/4 c of flour

  disolve
  1 pkg of yeast in
1 1/4 cups of warm water
  Add
  2 tsp sugar
  1 tsp salt
  2 TBs of oil

Mix in 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 cups of flour

Knead for 5 minutes, cover and let it rise for one hour.

Put it in a skillet or pan; flatten it out a bit and brush the top
with bacon drippings and add minced onion.

Cover and let it rise another hour.

Heat smoker to about 315. Bake bread in smoker until done (about 1
  hour)

When baked this in an oven, bake at 375 for 25 to 30 minutes.

Preparation Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
  Cooking Time: 1 hour

You can add onion and garlic to the dough... it's easy to spice the
  bread up a bit.
It was tempting to just eat it hot off the smoker with butter, but I
  saved it for my sandwich.

MMMMM

Stephen
