============================
Hi Nancy,

NB> NB>> college, just married, etc etc)... and then the body reminds
NB> with NB>> its aches and pains and challenges... :)

RH> Especially when you ask it to do something it's not used to doing.
RH> Steve was working under the kitchen sink putting in the garbage
RH> disposal--said he had to contort himself quite a bit in ways he wasn't
RH> used to. He used the car jack to hold the disposal in place while
 RH> fastening it in. (G)

NB> Hopefully he didn't re-injure the back... Good thinking on using the
 NB> jack... :)

So far, the back is doing ok (at least he's not said anything about it
hurting a lot more). We ordered 3 big items to be delivered, 2 to fit
empty spaces, one as a replacemrnt. We're getting a new washer & dryer,
plus, in evaluating the in place stove (and having trouble cleaning it),
we've ordered a new one. No gas fittings so we're going with another
smooth top, with convection oven (3! racks in it) and 5 cooking areas on
top, 2 of them having dual pot size capabilities and fast boil settings.

NB> NB>> while... nowadays, there are days I need it to haul myself up,
NB> NB>> when the legs (knees, ankles) don't want to work easily... :)

RH> I usually keep a hand on a rail if one is there, just to keep steady.
RH> The new house has several steps to the front door, unlike this place
RH> where it's a matter of a couple of inches between the driveway &
 RH> porch.

NB> We used to just have a hand on the side of the house, before the rail
NB> was installed... which is fine for steadying, but not so good if a bit
 NB> more is needed. :)

My parents had no railings for years, but wide steps. Then a railing was
put on one side out front, not sure if there's a 2nd one there or not
but the ramp has dual rails and gets used most of the time. There's a
grab bar on the side of the house by the back steps but I don't think
Dad goes out there any more. Even with the rails, getting Mom in and out
of the house the last few years was a major undertaking.

RH> All went well with the signing but there are a number of
RH> things Steve is working on before we do much moving of boxes. I'm
RH> filling the boxes as he does the other work.

NB> At least you are on the downward slope now. :)

You think so? To look at the pile up of boxes to be filled, I sometimes
wonder. Then I realise how many boxes have been filled. I took today off
from box filling but will resume for a bit tomorrow. Living room and
sewing room are well under control, bedroom shouldn't be too bad. It's
the kitchen and computer room that will take the most work. One bathroom
is 85% packed, the other won't take too long.

NB> RH>> things much nicer in the kitchen.
NB> NB>> Good things to put in right at the start, when you can...
NB> especially NB>> when you do so much cooking... :)

 RH> That's the idea.

NB> And you have the luxury of not having to move out immediately from the
NB> old place so you have that flexibility... :)

That was the intent but we hope to be all out and have the place cleaned
out/up by the middle of December.

NB> NB>> a gas stove now... I wouldn't totally discount the idea, but
NB> it's NB>> also totally possible that the ancient electric stove will
NB> outlast NB>> us as well, making the issue moot... ;)

RH> Possible, or it could die completely tomorrow--but let's hope not.

NB> So far we've been able to replace important things that died, keeping
NB> the oven working... and at least two of the burners are fully
NB> functional, so they aren't likely to die overnight. Dunno if we could
NB> get replacements for them, but Richard's quite ingenious at devising
 NB> solutions... ;)

Bubble gum, bailing twine and coat hangers? Checking out antique stores
for stoves like yours? (G)

NB> fresh piece of paper and NB>> started typing. No need to name stuff
NB> and then have to delete the old NB>> to use the same name (or to
NB> rename it, if one wanted to keep the

RH> True, she never made the "leap" in learning.

NB> For some that was an uncrossable chasm... or at least felt like it.

And if the mind is beginning to fade, the chasm is wider.

NB> over the years... NB>> But the most she's done with the computer was
 NB> doing genealogy
NB> NB>> messages on Prodigy... as far as I know she's not even doing
NB> NB>> e-mail... she left all that technology stuff to my uncle...

RH> My dad has been the one doing the technology stuff too, but has been
RH> doing much less of it the past year or so. I did send him an e-mail a
RH> couple of weeks ago and got a one sentence reply a few days later. I
RH> think now most of the time he's on the computer, he's playing Free Cell.

NB> That can be addicting... and he probably doesn't have the energy he
NB> used to, physical or possibly even mental...

From what Don says, it's both physical and mental. He's still mentally
sharper than Mom but has his own issues to deal with.

NB> NB>> And now, you just have to get the new kitchen in
NB> NB>> order, and you'll be cooking back to normal again...

RH> It'll be a few weeks before the kitchen is in order. I'm hoping to
RH> have everything basically in place by Christmas, fine tuning placements
RH> over the rest of the time we're in the house.

NB> That sounds like a possible timeline. ;) Fine-tuning is ongoing...
 NB> :)

Especially as we've got long range plans for what we want to do. Steve
asked if I wanted a walk in panty eventually--definate yes there.

Catch you later,
Ruth
