This way you force yourself to consume basil in a dish in
which it doesn't go.

Anyhow, Pride of Szeged used to be a premium brand, but its
cheapness (no doubt owing to the favorable dollar/forint
exchange rate) meant that it became over some years the
default offering in the supermarkets. My heart once jumped
when I saw that red tin (which used to be the size and shape
of an Old Bay tin but now is the form of a black pepper tin),
and in fact I still get a mild warm feeling when I see it.
At some point there was some glitch in the supply chain, and
depending on where you were (we discussed this here) you
could get only the hot or only the sweet, seldom both. After
a while, the tins started saying Spiceco on them; whether
that was because of a distribution arrangement, a takeover,
or an acknowledgment of an existing relationship I don't
know. The only products that entered my consciousness were
paprikas, but later on obviously some others appeared, no
doubt because Spiceco had floor sweepings it wanted to use up.

A visit to prideofszeged.com yields just one page, a photo
of a (newer, vertical) tin of Erospaprika surrounded by what
appear to be plastic sculptures of idealized Hungarians,
the caption "will the real pride of szeged please stand up".
spiceco.com is a porn site. spice-co.com offers a rosy and
prima facie inaccurate history of the enterprise. Speaking
of inaccurate,

NJ is recalling PRIDE OF SZEGED SWEET HUNGARIAN PAPRIKA because
it may contain undeclared Peanut Allergen. People who have an
allergy or severe sensitivity to Peanut Allergen run the risk
of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume
this product.

This product was sold between September 18, 2014 and October
13, 2014 to distributors located in IL, NJ, CT, MI, FL, NY,
OH, CA and VA.

Pride of Szeged Hungarian Paprika is packaged in a metal tin
container with the lot number 091617PAHU05PS printed on the
lower edge of the lid.

No illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported to date.

The problem was brought to Spiceco's attention on January 27,
2015 after the Tennessee Department of Agriculture conducted
routine retail food product sampling in the Cleveland area
on a 5 oz container of Pride of Szeged Hungarian Paprika which
revealed the presence of peanut allergen. Lot number
091617PAHU05PS showed positive for the presence of a peanut
allergen not disclosed on the product label.

urged to return to it to the place of purchase for a full

My Lilli is less useful than that.

Wow, that was a long post. I was going to append comments
on your Valentine's Day dinner, but there's no room for that.
Instead - a recipe using paprika that I would endorse only
if that ingredient was omitted.

Double-Dipped Onion Rings
cat: Arkansas, side
servings: 6 to 8

3 to 4 lg onions
1 1/2 c flour
1/4 c paprika
3 ts salt
2 ts coarse ground pepper
1 ts garlic powder
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 1/2 c buttermilk
12 oz bottle good quality dark ale
Oil for deep frying

Peel onions and slice into wide slices. Separate slices
into rings. Mix flour, paprika, 2 ts salt, pepper
and garlic into large bowl, plastic bag or paper bag.
Set aside. Mix, eggs, buttermilk, ale and 1 ts
salt in large bowl. Heat oil in deep, heavy pot to about
350F. Dip onion ring in egg mixture, then flour
mixture and repeat process. (It is important to "double
dip" the onion rings). Drop a few at a time into the hot
oil. Cook until golden brown. Remove to paper towel to
drain. Sprinkle with kosher salt and serve.
