Ärende: This echo...
====================

MVDV>> I know that was one of the reasons given, but I don't buy

 > For many of us, it was the primary if not the only reason.
 > At the time I had no reason to suspect ill will on the part
 > of Z2 sysops.

There was no ill will on the part of the Z2 sysops. Period.

MVDV>> that. calling from the US to Europe may be more expensive
MVDV>> than calling long distance within the US, but it is not all
 MVDV>> that more expensive.

 > How about 10 to 1 in cost?

How about it. Ten times a small amount is still not very much.

 > At the time, an interstate call cost me about 10 cents per minute,
 > but a call to Europe was more than $1.00 per minute.

Even if that is true, how long does it take to transmit the information> 30
seconds? So it staill only costs a Dollar a year. Big deal.

MVDV>> Anyewy, if it is true it is a very selfish reason. Wherever
MVDV>> the e-list is maintained, the majority of moderators have
MVDV>> to make intercontinental calls if they wish to deliver the
 MVDV>> data by direct mail.

 > Why would that be?

Some one wil have to make the call.

 > The zone 1 people would call the list maintained in zone 1,
 > the zone 2 people would call the list maintained in zone 2.
 > The two lists would continue to be merged

And who would pay for the cost of making the calls to keep the lists in sync?

 >> Routed netmail of messages containing the password for the echo was
 >> not considered secure enough.

Odd, You trust a self apointed e-list keeper who is not accounatble to anyone
with your echolist password, but you will not trust a mail router that is
subject to policy and one that you can even chose yourself.

Souds like an excuse to me....

MVDV>> That could heve been solved by using encryption.

 > Which is forbidden in some circles.

Forbidden by whom?

 > And awkward to set up for the masses. And not programmed for.

Excuses, excuses...

 > And against policy for routed netmail unless done via special
 > links who have given explicit permission to route encrypted traffic.

That goes for unencrypted mail as well. The only routed mail with implied
permission is host routed netmail. Any other routing requires permission.
Another excuse...

MVDV>> I can not shred the suspicion that they just wanted the e-
MVDV>> list to remain in Z1.

 > For the reasons I stated, they wanted the updates of echos
 > for moderators in zone 1 to go to a zone 1 elist keeper.

Excuses...

 > That was, and still is, the majority of the moderators of
 > intercontinentally distributed echos.

Maybe. But why now the restriction to intercontinentally distriburted echos?
Don't all the arguments in favour of the e-list that you continue to preech not
hold for regional mail as well?

MVDV>> Whatever the reasons, the point is that they rejected the
MVDV>> merged Z1-Z2 list and so torpedoed any attempt to come to a
MVDV>> glbal list and by doing that, they made Thom's list a Z1
 MVDV>> list.
 >
 > They did not reject the concept of a merged z1-z2 list.

They de facto did.

 > They asked for it to continue.

 >> Since then, the person who had been maintaining the Z2
 >> portion of the Elist at first refused to merge with Thom's Elist

MVDV>> I am not aware that ever being offered.

 > Then you were not there where it was discussed.

Wrong. Of course I do not know what when on in the private, but I do know what
Peter reported in ENET.SYSOP. I was there.

 >> and then later simply withdrew for maintaining a list at all.

MVDV>> Yes, he got tired of the political games and stepped down.
 MVDV>> Tjere was no successor.
 >
 > Sounds like -- "you won't play the way I want, so I'm taking
 > my ball and leaving the playground in a snit".

from this side it looked just the other way around. He got fed up with you guys
playing the "my way or the high way" game.

 >> That left the list maintained by Thom as the only possible choice
 >> for those who wanted to list internationally distributed echos.

 > Which was not Thom's fault. It was Peter's fault.

From this end it looked just the other way around.

Knowing how Thom handles things - dance to my tune or else - that shoe fits
much better.

MVDV>> Nonsence. Many choose to just not have their echo's listed.

Or they could have chosen to appoint a successor for Peter.

 > Whatever.

Indeed, whatever. It is all water under the bridge. My point stands. By
restarting their own list after the merger failed, the Z1 sysops created a Z1
list and that's what it still is: a Z1 list.

Cheers, Michiel
