A friend of mine has sites where he goes to get pirated software,
usually utilities that are either rather expensive, or just unavailable
to the ordinary computer user. And he gets some really great stuff
sometimes. But there's a kind of harsh trade-off;


Every once in awhile he gets hold of something that either wasn't set
up correctly by the `pirate' guru who filched it, or it was a program
that contained a file that, if the program isn't legally purchased and
properly registered, will corrupt the entire program after the second
or third illegal use.


A few times he's even had to completely re-format his C: in order to
wipe whatever fucked up his operating system.


He backs his system up almost weekly, since some of the flight programs
he has put add-ons in boost the size of the program tremendously. His
Microsoft Flight Simulator for instance, with the program itself and
all the add-ons he's gotten, plus the scenery he's `built' himself,
make the program top out at around twenty gig or more he tells me.


Recently, I found a copy of `Nero Start Smart', but it was an old one
with limited features. But it would do what I needed it to do at the
time, so I bought it. Used it to back up some files I had on a drive I
wasn't able to access using Windows XP Pro.....but `could' access by
re-installing Windows 98 SE to an old drive I had.


He goes out to one of his pirate sites and gets a copy of Nero that is
the brand new version (version 7, I think), calls me up and tells me
he's gettin' the program right then in a download that will take about
an hour, but he'll have it for me soon.


In the mean time I went to Fry's, a local computer market, and while I
was there I looked for that program and priced it. It retailed for $99.


So.....the guy finishes downloading the program from the pirate site,
he opens the file and it starts setting itself up. Its almost finished
setting up, and his computer hangs! No matter what he did he couldn't
get it to `un'hang. Finally he just turned it off and tried to re-boot,
but it wouldn't re-boot. It only went through the start-up sequence,
got to where it `opens' the desktop, and instead it was right back in
the screen where it hung, and that was it.


He had to re-format his whole drive, re-intall Windows XP (a `pirated'
version, by the way), and then he (are you ready for this!) goes back
to the pirate site and *re*-downloads that same program!


He offered the program to me when he gets it set up. I told him I had
the `freeware' version that did what I wanted it to (back up files and
directories in case I have another computer crash), and didn't need the
newer version. The truth is.....I'd be very leery of putting anything
he gave me on my system before I saw how it ran on `his' system, anyway.
