Hi Roy,
On Fri 2039-Jan-21 11:25, Roy Witt (1:387/22) wrote to Richard Webb:
RW> <rotfl> REcall that, from about the same time. WAs a bit
RW> younger but did the traveling show for the summers with
RW> bandleader signing the papers for both Musicians' union and
RW> my parents saying he'd be responsible for my conduct and
RW> proper behavior <yeah right>.
Roy> If you had been found to be a druggy or got into some kind of
Roy> trouble, he would be held responsible as your guardian. Especially
Roy> when the authorities read that signed paper.
OF course, and I knew to keep it to a dull roar ya might say <grin>. Learned a
lot and had fun. I liked the fact that
thanks to weekend engagements, and waht I was earn over the
summer I wasn't doing the 3-5 nights a week part-time gig
after school to have a little pocket jingle of my own as
many of my friends were. That was the main reason my
parents approved in fact, instead of finding that part-time
job on school nights (except for a musical rehearsal) I
could participate in all the usal extracurricular stuff that makes for a well
rounded kid.
Roy>>> Hate it when that happened. Gave them 50 cents each and sent them
Roy>>> to the movies.
RW>> YEp, but when they came to stay a little more difficult to
RW>> do all the time <grin>.
Roy> Sometimes I'd take them myself.
YEah that was always a good one, tried to find opportunities to actually bond
with them now and then, and do something
everybody found to be pleasant.
Roy>> Her dad and his new wife (my former landlady) became the
Roy>> new custodians and I trusted both of them.
RW> Similar sort of situation, except I'm on the road all the
RW> time and my parents were the custodians at least in the
RW> girls' younger years.
Roy> Heh. I wasn't exactly on the road all the time, but I did move
Roy> around a bit. Met a gal at a party who was from LA and spent a few
Roy> days at her place at a time. Then she moved to San Jose, so I spent
Roy> a week at a time up there. Had a spare car, so I drove it up there
Roy> and left it in her care, flying back and forth. All this while
Roy> collecting unemployment. I did find a job while I was up north, but
Roy> quit when she and I split up a few months later. That was getting to
Roy> be a pain anyway, flying back and forth and only being at home on
Roy> weekends.
YEah does make for an interesting relationship all the way
around. Did that for awhile before marrying second wife. I was working in the
dark room at a hospital in northern Iowa, she lived in Des Moines. Get off
work Saturdays at around
noon, ride the Greyhound to Des MOines, hang out with her,
ride the dog back Sunday night.
RW> THen they went back to their mother and some things happened to the
RW> girls that we won't go into here, but suffice it to say my parents
RW> stepped in so there wouldn't be extreme bloodshed.
<snip>
Roy> I didn't have much to say about that sort of thing from 2200 miles
Roy> away. What their mother did was her business anyway. There was a
Roy> time when my youngest daughter was being molested by her boyfriend.
Roy> That's when I made a trip to Illinois and put my two cents worth
Roy> into it. He never touched her again, AFAIK.
sImilar, won't go into all that, but folks knew I'd get
downright mean about that one.
Roy>> King and live with his girlfriend. His choice came back to bite him
Roy>> in the arse and she ended up putting him through school.
RW> YEp, they live and learn. YOungest one never did pick up on it, she
RW> moved out on her own, eldest got into some bad situations and ended
RW> up with me, and I made that offer too, but she took up with a
RW> boyfriend instead. OH well.
Roy> My son and his live-in girlfriend were being chastised for living in
Roy> sin by her grandmother, so they decided it would be best to get
Roy> married. They were both 20. I tried to talk him out of it, but he
Roy> (and she) was set on marrying. As I predicted, it didn't last long.
YEp, parallel with eldest as well. YOungest looked like she was developing
stable relationship with guy who's her son's
dad, but he had some bad medical issues, brain tumor, etc.
Iirc they're basically doing the bring him back very slowly
to able to walk talk feed himself, etc. But, at least
eldest, though her marriage didn't work out either time is
living a stable sort of life.
RW> IT hasn't been easy for the kids either with all this. Eldest is
RW> finally settling down to a stable lifestyle, she's got some health
RW> problems, but she trains service dogs.
Roy> My oldest is 49yo now and has a nice family. He's a Continental
Roy> airline mechanic, she's now a housewife with a brood of chickens and
Roy> sells eggs while the kids go to school. Quite a difference from when
Roy> she was 25.
YEp, same with my eldest, she's going to be 46 in May. WAs
pretty concerned about her there for a few years, but she's
pulling it together.
RW> YOungest ... I don't know, I worry a lot about her, but there's not
RW> a thing I can do for her. My parents have her son, and he's a
RW> sophomore in high school this year. AT least he's got a stable safe
RW> environment.
Roy> My youngest is living in Florida and has a ready-made family. She
Roy> doesn't have any kids of her own. She's a big-shot for the city in
Roy> which they live, close to Okeechobee. She got her looks from her
Roy> father, blonde, blue eyed and unlike her father, a perfect figure.
Sounds like you're doing much better in that department htan I, but ... wish
eldest would pursue her education more and
her artistic abilities, especially if the health problems
take her out of the service dog training thing, but at least that gave her some
mental equilibrium at a time when she
needed it. YOungest, I don't know, I just wish she'd find a place where she
feels like she fits.
Roy>> guess he gained a whole lot of respect for me, as he's still in
Roy>> touch today.
RW> Kathy's were already grown by the time we hooked up.
Roy> Nancy's daughter, Racheal, was 10 when we got together. She and her
Roy> brother lived with their dad and visited with us on weekends. I
Roy> broke the adult/child bearer when Nancy went to the grocery store
Roy> and left Rach in the spare room (boring in there). I asked if she'd
Roy> like to come out and watch Disney cartoons and we soon became good
Roy> friends. She's just now having her first child, sometime in the next
Roy> few days. She's as old now as Nancy was when we met back in 1980.
SOrta did that with Kathy's eldest daughter's eldest son
when we lived in Iowa. WE ended up with him a couple of
summers. Once I was doing some restoration on an old barn
cum restaurant which was going to become performing arts
education center. PUt a little bit of jingle in his pocket
for helping with some of that work, and bonded with him
quite a bit that summer. Last I knew he was working in a
warehouse.
RW> HEr grandkids figured out quickly though that Richard would
RW> endeavor to be fair, but Richard would only say no, or cease and
RW> desist once.
Roy> I've never had to be Rach an Mike's parent...kinda like it that way.
Roy> You and Mike would hit it off as he's a muscian (had his own bands),
Roy> works for RCA in LA now. He's always reviewing new artists' work and
Roy> promoting it to DJs, etc..
PRobably would. I really miss the playing part since I left NEw ORleans
<grin>.
Regards,
Richard
