The Earth climate model IMHO is like this:
1. We have a cylinder with a plunger. There is fluid inside the cylinder 
below the plunger. An umbrella is tied to the plunger and located over 
this thingumajig. The umbrella partially hides it from the sun warmth.

2. When the fluid is cool the umbrella partially closed and the sun 
warms the cylinder and the fluid. Gradually, the fluid begins to expand; 
the plunger goes up and the umbrella is opening; the warming of the 
cylinder begins to reduce. After the fluid cooling the process repeats 
itself endlessly.

3. Projecting it on the real Earth climate we have the Earth's clouds as 
the umbrella. The fluid is the Earth's atmosphere.

The period of the cycle maybe different because of some factors - the 
sun radiation, the Earth's internal activity (when the latter is high 
many warmth gets into the Earth's oceans and atmosphere).

There has never been an Earth's temperature which could be called 
"normal". It is always a part of the cycle. If the human race 
accelerates the cycle period the earth will have more clouds and they 
limit the sun rays. It is a self-regulating system and we don't have 
some catastrophic evens.

They say that this process have an ice period on the low phase. But it 
IMHO it demands for a great global warming, and most likely the ice 
periods are connected with the big surge of either sun activity or 
Earth's internal activity, or both.
